Activating a PSP System on a PS3

PS3 PSP Connected Image

Here’s a bit of info if you decide to upgrade your PSP and have downloaded some PS1 titles from the PlayStation Store. If you try to play them from the memory card, the first time you play them, you’ll get this error:

To use this content, you must activate the system.

Yeah, great information there on how to do that. After looking around the intarwebs for a bit, I finally found some information on how exactly to do this. So if you get stuck in the position I was, here’s how to get around it:

  • On your PS3, go to Account Management under the Friends portion of the XMB
  • Go to Account Settings in the Account Management screen (your only other option is for transactions)
  • Go to Activate System
  • Connect your PSP to the PS3 with the USB cable
  • On your PSP, under Settings on the XMB, go to USB Connection
  • On the PS3, select PSP on the activation menu (your only other option is PS3)
  • Select Activate (your only option is Deactivate)
  • The PS3 will tell you that your PSP has been activated

Once that’s done, you can exit out of Account Management on the PS3 and exit out of USB Mode on the PSP. You’re now all set for playing PS1 titles on your PSP system. Lots of steps that Sony definitely should publish somewhere on their website.

If your going to buy any PS1 game for your PSP, buy FFVII. That was by far the best FF in my opinion, there are a lot that come close, but something about FFVII just drew me in.

I can confirm that this works! We have PS3 and several PSPs, too which however caused THIS problem: the PS1 games you download from PSN for your PS3 are limited to use with only 5 different PSPs. Now what happened: we always had 3 PSPs at home. All fat, all orig, no custom firmware on any of those. And - this is important! - ALL the 3 PSPs had been registered on yourpsp.com plus they had been activated on our PS3. However, one of those PSPs got stolen, and the other got broken forever. So we got 2 new PSP Slims instead. We registered them and activated them. Now we exchanged the last PSP fat (we sold it to someone else) against a Ceramic White Slim. And guess what? WE CANNOT PLAY PS1 GAMES ON THIS PSP BECAUSE WE EXCEEDED THE LIMIT OF 5 ACTIVATED PSPs ON ONE PS3! Could some Sony representative explain how the hell am I supposed to deactivate a PSP when it’s broken or stolen or sold thus I have no more access to it? Does that mean that it’s all my fault if I activate the systems and then let them stolen and broken yet before deactivating them? Do I ever have chance to reset all the activated systems and reactivate only those I currently can use?
