Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow (PSP) Review

Syphon Filter: Logan’s Mirror Screen

Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow is the next in the series as Gabe Logan tries to defend freedom. The game is hands down one of the best titles on the PSP to date and is a potential PSP Game of the Year candidate. Here is a breakdown of some of the facets of Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow for the PSP:

Presentation and Graphics: Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow is easily the best looking PSP game we’ve seen to date. From the cinematics to all in-game graphics, the graphics are stellar. The character models and environments all have a great look and feel all with amazing lighting effects. Sony continues to draw more and more power out of the PSP and Logan’s Shadow really shows that off. 4.5 of 5

Sound and Music: Like the graphics, the sound really shines in Logan’s Shadow. Sony put in some time to get each weapon to sound just right, and it really shows. Foot steps on different surfaces have distinct sounds that mirror their real life counterparts. Voice acting is great as well. There isn’t a lot of music in the game, but that’s because it’s not needed. When included, the background tracks really enhance the feel of the game. 4.5 of 5

Gameplay: Logan’s Shadow utilizes the PSP’s left analog stick for movement and the face buttons for aiming and camera control. The controls are very tight and spot on. The only thing that could make them better would be a right analog stick on the PSP. The single player game begins as Gabe Logan has to investigate a Somali takeover on a US Naval ship which is transporting some classified material in one of it’s holds. You get to start play by taking out all emeries on the ship’s deck from your transport helicopter with it’s machine gun. Very cool. Once you get on deck, you have to take cover as more enemies are making their way for you to try to stop the infamous Gabe Logan. The game isn’t run and gun; you need to utilize cover to get your job done. 5 of 5

Multiplayer: The game has one of the best multiplayer implementations of the PSP has seen. Logan’s Shadow supports up to 8 players in both Ad Hoc and Infrastructure WiFi. In all the games I’ve played there has been zero lag. There are five online modes: Team Deathmatch, Retrieval, Sabotage, Rogue Agent, and Deathmatch. The first three are team based, while the last two have you out on your own. My personal favorite is Sabotage, which has you disarming a bomb set by the other team. With the great gameplay modes, large online community and no lag, Logan’s Shadow is my current favorite online PSP title. 5 of 5

Lasting Appeal: Logan’s Shadow provides hours of action in it’s single player campaign. There’s not a whole lot of replay value for single player, but the multiplayer mode more than makes up for that. You could easily spend hours online in the various gameplay modes. 4.5 of 5

Final Word: With a deep single player mode and the best multiplayer we’ve seen on the PSP, Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow is a must buy. From the story to the gameplay, this game has it all.

Overall: 4.75 of 5

1 = Not worth the bandwidth.

2= Demo is enough, not worth your money.

3= Game is good, depending on the price, seriously consider picking it up.

4= Worth your money. Should provide some good times for quite awhile.

5= Buy the game. Lock your door. Pick up a case of beer. This could take all night.
