Poll: What makes you a better FPS player?

WolfensteinI have spent quite a bit of time playing Halo 3 the last few days and I realized that I am one rusty mofo! It also got me thinking about what really is important to be good at a first person shooter. At first I blamed not knowing the maps, then I blamed not playing for a while, then I thought I just sucked, then I thought it was the random teams I was put into, but I realized that there was probably some truth to all of the above. I have seen improvement with more play time but got me thinking about what exactly people think is the most important factor to be successful at playing and winning at first person shooters like Halo, CounterStrike, Team Fortress, etc.

I suck at aiming. That’s why I never win at any FPS games

Ok the best way to explain what makes you good at an FPS is really a little bit of everything. Skills, map, game, and mode/mod knowledge, luck, its all a factor. If you suck at aiming or movement practice a lot and you will slowly get better, sometimes it can take years. good movement and a smart approach is key, if you are on a server that plays only one map and you keep getting owned going the same direction, change it up, fake your opponent out poke your head out the usual way and when the enemy goes around the corner sneak up from behind and put your knife in his back.

If your whole team camps spawn, leaving you with no choice but to also camp then that can really be a true factor, even in team games where team work really doesn’t count, having a half way decent team who actually moves around and goes for it is important to your survival. A new map you don’t know will make you lose a lot but learn it and you will be fine. some people do better in certain types of maps than others.

Camping upgrades, especially armor can lead to victory, but skill will tare it up. a noob armed with full armor and a BFG can still get owned by the pro with the glock. real pros don’t camp too much in a multiplayer game, it tends to get them banned.

In the end PRACTICE, and the intelligence to figure out enemy movement while mastering your own will make you a king of any decent FPS. with practice your aim and skill with all weapons will improve. not everyone has the smarts to learn what cover and good dodging is. some gamers don’t want to experience the game enough so they camp at every opportunity.

Lastly, for your own sake don’t leave a game just because you are getting slaughtered. push through and play there a lot, your skills will develop until you are just as good as everyone else on those servers.
