Simpsons games have developed a pattern in the history of video games. That pattern is overall sucking. How can a franchise that is the longest running sitcom in the 50 year history of television been so inept at making even a playable video game? The next gen version of the Simpsons promises to deliver a gaming experience we have all longed for. The demo allows you to play as Bart and Homer, though you find that Homer is pretty much useless in this level. You battle the Lard Lad mascot, which is brought to life by the two aliens that show up every Halloween. Lard Lad is hell bent on destroying the city but there seems to be no time limit in which to stop him. Without spoiling the gameplay, you have to use Bart to damage the robot/mascot and bring him down. The commentary is done by our favorite newscaster Kent Brockman which actually is pretty cool. His Kent-isms are hilarious and there is plenty of them. The gameplay might take some getting used to. You seem to pick up life along the way, though I don’t know how. I kept killing the Krusty dolls that chased me around. There are plenty of things to pick up such as pickups which are only obtainable with the correct character. The game promises to deliver 16 missions that allow you to play as all 5 family members each with specific abilities as well as 170 NPC’s you can interact with. There should be plenty of Simpsons dogma for the many hardcore fans that are out there. The jury is still out on this one, but expect a full review once Gamefly delivers the game to my doorstep.

“…though you find that Homer is pretty much useless in this level. ”
Anyone else find that statement hilarious, or is it just me?
I have the demo, but haven’t tried it yet. I need more hours in the day.
the camera seemend very wonky to me. The demo actually confused me a lot as there’s no direction about what to do. Definitely not sold on this one
@ pandas: You have to hit the back button on the controller to get the current objective. In the demo you have to target and shoot the buttons on the back of Lard Lad to make the hatch pop open, then jump up on the open hatch and press Y to destroy the circuitry. You have to do this 3 times (ass, back, head) to blow up Lard Lad.
The thing I found annoying about it was the camera. It is the type that floats around the characters head, and it gets a bit cumbersome in tight spaces as it suceptible to the physics of the map (i.e. if you are in a corner and turn around to look out from the corner, you can’t rotate the camera around so you can see where you’re going as it hits the walls. I only really see this being an issue in enclosed maps, and I’m not sure how many of those will be in the full game. It works fine in open areas.
I’ll probably pick this one up just because I’m a Simpson’s die-hard, but we’ll have to see how it all plays out.
The demo definitely looked great in HD though…
I just deleted the demo. The camera, controls and lack of goal-direction was waaaay too annoying. I mean, in this day and age how can such a high-profile game have so many problems. And who the hell approved the release of a demo for a high profile game with so many problems? Christ.
Bart’s Nightmare- SNES. Best. Simpson.Game.Ever. (And yes, after 10 years, that is kinda sad).
