RIP My Xbox 360 Elite

Smashed Xbox 360

After just over 5 months, my Xbox 360 Elite has kicked the bucket. I get disk read errors on every disk I put in the tray, whether it’s a game, movie, or audio disk. Good times.

This marks my 6th Xbox 360 to die since launch day. Yes, my 6th. F’ing ridiculous.

I know some people are going to jump all over this in comments saying I treat it badly or whatever, but that is far from the case. My Xbox 360 has it’s own shelf in the entertainment center, with full ventilation from the front and rear. The power brick also sits on the shelf fully ventilated. The console is never moved when playing (in fact, it’s only moved a tiny bit once a week to dust). The console is kept perfectly clean, as are my other systems. I haven’t had any problems with my PS3 (save long install times) or my Wii. Never had problems with my PS2, Xbox, or Gamecube before that.

I guess I’ll be making a trip to Best Buy this afternoon to get this thing swapped out. Maybe #7 will be a lot luckier than the first 6 consoles I’ve gone through. At least I didn’t get the red ring of death again this time.

I’m assuming you have the bestbuy warrenty. How does that work? Do you just walk in and swap the system out. Or do you get a credit to put towards a new xbox if you want to upgrade or something.

My xbox is having some disk read errors, and I am waiting until the 65nm chips are pretty popular to exchange it, so I figure after christmas I’ll try.

Oh yea, if anyone here gets an xbox, go for the bestbuy warrenty, if it works like I think it does, it is well worth the money.

Yeah I have the Best Buy warranty. You take your broken console in and they replace whatever you brought. They open up a box of the console and take out a new console and give you that. If you want to swap the controller and everything, you have to bring all the parts back.

For what its worth and I know you shouldnt have to do this but you can buy a multi fan system from game stores or off the net which fixes to the back of the 360 giving it better air flow although noise levels are a bit like a plane taking off ..dunno if i have been lucky but i have had mine over a year and no worries …still on my first 360… should only cost $30 paid £15 over here in England

If I was getting the RRoD, that would be something to think about. But there is definitely more than enough ventilation going to all of my consoles. I think it’s just poor Quality Assurance on the part of Microsoft. I really thought they would have these issues ironed out by now.

yeha my system has been acting up lately, freezing when i try to read messages or listen to voice emssages. i thought maybe it was halo related since a million people were on at hte same time, I also had some halo 3 mathcmaking issues, where it wouldnt let me find a game. i hope my system doesnt take a dirt nap, getting another one is annoying.

Yea Taz, it kind of freezes for a minute, and then you have to either wait, or just restart the system. Very annoying indeed.

@TimB26 - I would suggest you take that cooling unit off of the back of your 360 immediately. Some of them have a problem where they draw too much power from the 360 at startup, since it connects directly to the 360’s power port. This ends up shorting out the 360, or causing problems over time that Microsoft does not cover because it was caused by a 3rd party hardware.

A much better solution is to get a USB cooler for the 360. Using this, it can not draw too much power, since it uses USB. The USB coolers are a much better solution to keeping your 360 cool.

I keep my power brick on a different shelf, mostly because the damn thing is an eyesore. But my Core 360 (my bro got it for me and all the premium stuff for the same price as the premium) is still working as good as it did when I unpacked it, woo hoo.

I think that’s why Microsoft is getting rid of the Cores, because they don’t break as often, it’s cutting into their repair cashcow. ;)

I really thought I was the only one…I just replaced my 4th xbox 360 and in 3 days (right after I bought Halo 3) my 5th one crapped out on me and gave me the 3 red lights. Now I’m waiting for Xbox 360 number 6 to come along and die as well. I was “lucky” though, walmart exchanged my first 3 360’s because they all broke in the first 90 day of purchase. Yay walmart.

the BIGGEST problem with the 360’s breaking are the games they make the actual GPU (graphics card) cant handle them properly so it actually overclocks it’s self which causes heat with give u the rings of death, halo 3 uses alot of shaders and particles, and that game alone causes ALOT of fuckups for the 360, some people think it’s not true but it is, my buddy only plays san andreas and saints row, not the greatest for graphics, and he’s had his since launch, smoking around it has lots to do with it to in my opinion my buddy boxes his room daily and plays games like bioshock and halo 3 and has gone threw like 8 or 9 now, and he takes reallll good care of his shit, the guy who only plays saints row dosent
