PS3 Annoyance: Installing Games/Demos

PS3 XMB Network Icons

Why is it that after every game or demo download from the PlayStation Store, you have to sit and install the file? I know it gets taken care of if you don’t download in the background, but who does that anymore? Queuing up downloads is a must, especially when there are lots of things you want.

So why after spending a long time downloading something do I have to spend 10 more minutes staring at the screen as the game slowly installs? You’re handcuffed while this going on, as you can’t do anything else on the console (and can’t cancel the process if you feel the need). Can’t Sony work this into the background downloading? I sincerely hope this is a feature that gets implemented in a future firmware update.

[Update] I’m not referring to installing Game Data when you first load a retail game disc. I’m talking about downloading titles from the PlayStation Store.

Maybe Sony can add an option in the future that we select that will just install the games after the downloads finish. This doesn’t really bother me but I wouldn’t mind that option. I usually select a few items to download and let it start then switch to TV while it works. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to include an install option at the end.

Here’s a better question: why are people worried about silly things like this when, as PS3 owners, we STILL can’t send and receive messages will playing a game?

Thats really odd on my PS3 it takes only 1-2 minutes tops to install

Simpsons demo last night took about 45 seconds

maybe your PS3 is busted ever think of that?

  4. Bozo

    C’mon 10 min?
    you’re exaggerating

I think it takes a maximum of 2 min to install a demo after downloading it. It will be good if sony can change this but if you don’t have 2 min to install the game , why do u start the installation process in the first place?

The real downside about the current issue is when you download multiple demos and you go to sleep or whatever and when you come back to check them out, you’ll have to go through all the demos seperately and do all the button pushing.

Everybody has something to gripe about, but this is probably the lamest thing to complain on. And it takes maybe three minutes tops to install any of the demos downloaded.

This has always bugged me about my PS3. My 360 doesn’t have this problem. You download the game and can play it right away.

lol OMG not like 1-2 minutes of waiting is gonna kill you. Ohhh no I have to wait a minute before I try the game, what shall I do in that time ohhh dear me. Take a deep breath and count to 10 it’s ok you know.

  8. @ everyone – our editor will have a video coming shortly timing how long it takes, we can set the debate to rest with hard evidence.

@brian – would be nice to have that option built in, I would love to set up a bunch of downloads, wlak away and then just come abck and play. It isnt life threatening but would be nice to have.

The thing is, that the 360 manages to download demos without an extra installation (and please Sony, I really could do without the, “[Action is finished] Press 0 to continue.”) AND has a great multi-player/social-network platform…
Getting connected to one game in Warhawk takes twice as long as actually playing a 15 frag Slayer in Halo3! (including startup of console)…
Sony, please (and I’m on my knees here), give us Home now! Pretty please??!? Sugar on top?!!!?

  10. Anidor

…yet another reason why I’ll wait until Sony has all the details smoothed out before I pick up a PS3…

This has got to be the dumbest thing i have ever read. Do you own a computer and if so have you ever downloaded anything there is always a installer. This is the same thing as using internet explorer when you download something it says open now or save installer thats what you are selecting by saving in the background. If you hit download in the background you are selecting save installer. If you dont and just download it then it still has to install and still takes just as long you just hit a couple less buttons.

@Anidor – Don’t get me wrong, I still love my PS3! It’s taken over as upscaling DVD/BluRay-player in my setup, and given some really good downloadable game like LocoRoco Cocoreccho and Warhawk (it it a decent game once get in to a game, but I’d rather play Halo 3 since I’ve got both consoles ;) , Sony IS improving it all the time with updates… But since they didn’t have an online platform to develop further as Microsoft did with Live, they’re a bit behind, but they’ll catch up!

  13. kraftish

@Percy – But even given a comparison to a ordinary Win PC, the 360 still handles it without the extra installation. But I still think (hope) Sony’ll get the hang of it and correct it in one of the updates. It’s not a big deal, but it’s certainly an annoyance compared to the 360.

  14. Makidian

The point is that does two to three minutes to install something really matter that much? I mean check your e-mail or go pee, Jesus Christ someone is that annoyed by pushing a button! It’s completely ridiculous to complain about this. I will say though whatver video results are garnerd it has never taken me longer than five minutes to install anything. It took maybe a minute to do the Simpsons game and maybe two to three for Bladestorm. Is your time so important that you can’t wait? Seems to be a problem if that’s the case.

  15. I just timed an install of The Simpsons demo at a little over 8 minutes. I’m working to get a video camera to record a demo install

  16. Bob

The reason for the install time is because the XMB is based on Linux and installing files helps protect against corrupted files. If you download from 360 and don’t have to install, you have a chance that the file is corrupted.

  17. Wolf26pack

    @Drunk Panda’s

Wow the Simpsons Demo only took me 2 mins to install at the most. I am talking about only installing it, not downloading it as I too do that in the background. If you downloaded the demo in the background and then when u went to install it and it took you 8 mins from that point then there might be something wrong with your PS3.

IMHO this is just a convience issue and I believe there are more important issues and features the PS3 should have. If it was added at one point in the PS3’s future firmware though, you wouldn’t see me complaining.

  18. Chris

I’m with Anidor on this one. There are definitely more games coming out soon that are encouraging me to finally pick up a PS3, but the system itself seems to have some annoying qualities.

  19. Makidian

The Simpsons demo took somewhere between 1 and 2 minutes, so maybe it varies by the PS3. I am just making guesses here. The fact that Drunk Panda’s took eight minutes is kind of ridiculous but I find it hard to believe this is common among all PS3’s. Enchanted Arms locked up my PS3 five times throughout the game and that never happened to my brothers.

  20. I’m still working on getting a video camera to record this. I tried with my digital camera and you can’t make out anything on the TV. As soon as I can borrow one from somebody, I’ll put up a video.
