MS banks big bucks with Halo 3, gets cocky in the process

BankMicrosoft today released word that the Halo 3 franchise has topped off $300 million in sales since launch. MS have dubbed it the “fastest-selling video game ever and already one of the most successful entertainment properties in history.” This is hard to argue with as the boys at Bungie and MS really marketed it well and made sure everyone got a taste of the hype train. Kudos boys.

There is one part of the press release I don’t agree with, where MS states “Xbox 360 has the greatest lineup in the history of video games and is the only console where consumers can play all the year’s biggest blockbusters.” I think this is far too over zealous to state, the lineup is looking good, but the best in history, wow that is a tough call.

There have been some great lineups in the days of the NES, Xbox, PS1 and 2, which paved the way for what we have today in video games. MS has definitely the bankroll to show for their current success, which is also attributed to the fact that video gaming in the years of old was more of a underground cult, where gamers were a minority. Today video games have become a huge industry and I doubt we will diminish in size as all those kids that played the old consoles are now grown up and spending their hard earned money on games. I think their best in “history” is a bit over the top and minimalizes what the other older consoles have done to get games to this point.

It is impressive that about one third of all Xbox 360 owners have gotten a copy of Halo 3, I actually figured this statistic to be higher and will probably reach a lot more people during the holidays.

From the press releasse:

REDMOND, Wash. — Oct. 4, 2007 — Interactive entertainment will never be the same, with the launch of one title that has changed the way the world thinks about video games. “Halo® 3” has captured the attention of consumers worldwide and has made history as one of the biggest entertainment launches of all time.

Microsoft Corp. today announced that “Halo 3” has officially become a global phenomenon, garnering more than $300 million in sales in the first week alone. The critically acclaimed Xbox 360® exclusive, which was released worldwide on Tuesday, Sept. 25, is the fastest-selling video game ever and already one of the most successful entertainment properties in history.

Initial reports from retailers worldwide show console sales have more than doubled compared with the weekly average before the launch of “Halo 3.” With games such as “Halo 3,” “Madden 08” (EA Sports), “Mass Effect” (Microsoft Game Studios) and “Rock Band” (Harmonix), Xbox 360 has the greatest lineup in the history of video games and is the only console where consumers can play all the year’s biggest blockbusters.

“‘Halo’ is truly a cultural phenomenon, and the launch of ‘Halo 3’ is an important milestone for Xbox 360 and for video games as entertainment and as an art form,” said Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft. “‘Halo 3’ embodies our vision for the future of entertainment, where some of the world’s greatest creative minds will deliver a new generation of interactive storytelling.”

“Halo 3” is quickly staking its place as the most popular Xbox LIVE® game in history with members gathering in record numbers to play on the world’s largest online gaming and entertainment network on TV. More than 2.7 million gamers have played “Halo 3” on Xbox LIVE in the first week, representing nearly one-third of the 7 million Xbox LIVE members worldwide. Within the first day of its launch, “Halo 3” players worldwide racked up more than 3.6 million hours of online gameplay, which increased more than elevenfold to 40 million hours by the end of the first week, representing more than 4,500 years of continuous gameplay. Since “Halo 3 launched,” gamers have unlocked nearly 30 million achievements. In its first week alone, “Halo 3” drove a record number of Xbox LIVE Gold Memberships as hundreds of thousands of new members gathered online with friends, family members and other gamers around the world to collectively compete and complete the game.

“Halo 3” is the conclusion to the epic trilogy and picks up where “Halo 2” left off, answering questions about the fates of the beloved protagonist Master Chief™ and his artificial intelligence sidekick Cortana as they struggle to save humankind from destruction at the hands of the alien coalition known as the Covenant. In addition to the rich storyline, “Halo 3” continues the franchise’s grand tradition of delivering innovative online multiplayer experiences via Xbox LIVE. The game’s online multiplayer and innovative four-player cooperative gameplay for Xbox LIVE Gold users, the much-talked-about Saved Films feature that enables players to capture and save their favorite moments on their hard drives, and Forge, an innovative map editor that enables myriad customization options, are just some of the new features gamers are experiencing.

Developed by Bungie Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios, the “Halo” franchise is exclusive to the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system and optimized for the Xbox LIVE online entertainment network. “Halo 3” was released in 37 countries and 17 languages. To date, more than 20 million copies of the games in the “Halo” trilogy have been sold worldwide.

Record week-one sales come on the heels of the previously announced $170 million in sales in the U.S. within the first 24 hours of the game’s release, which marked not just the biggest video game launch, but the biggest entertainment launch in history. The Xbox 360 title beat previous U.S. sales records set by blockbuster openings for entertainment events such as the release of “Spider-Man 3” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” In addition, more than 1.7 million copies of “Halo 3” were pre-ordered in the United States, making it the fastest pre-selling game in history, surpassing the previous record-setting pre-sales of “Halo 2.”

Greatest lineup ever? I definitely do not agree there.

Greatest lineup out of the three next gen consoles, that I would agree with.

Making statements like that on a blog or something is one thing, but in a press release?

Let them brag because they won’t make sales like that on the 360 again. And if the rumor is true and they did let Bungie (best developers they bought) go(the biggest MS mistake of 07), it likely won’t happen again for them. EVER!

The fact that you didn’t mention The Genesis, SNES, Dreamcast discounts the greatest line-up you are trying to defend. Not that you did a bad thing. But I also have to say, so what if Microsoft is gloating? They actually can lay claim to the title. There never has been a game to do the numbers that Halo series has done in a short amount of time. Then you add in having a paid subscription service like live and the effect its’ having in the industry. Microsoft just may have a very valid and arguable point. I just think this line-up is very close to the best, and don’t have a problem with M$ saying so…

@The Kingslayer - I agree with you 100%. Besides, why would anyone the is NOT a corporation have a problem with Microsoft gloating. I can see other publishers, like Sony being a bit jealous. But, why all the jealous by bloggers, and sites like Loot Ninja. Only thing I can think of, and that is the biggest power in the gaming industry, bigger than MS, Sony, and Nintendo combined. And that would be the HARDCORE FANBOYISM. Since fanboyism is a human trait, and humans work at magazines and other game related sites, why would these places or people be any different than the rest of us. Is one thinks that fanboyism doesn’t infiltrate the ranks of professional reviewers and bloggers, they are both foolish and ignorant.

So, why is it such a big deal for MS to brag? Cause haters will make it a big deal by hating.

LOL @fanboyism. It’s not hate, it’s being realistic. I personally have every console. I also have a dreamcast, a genesis, a nomad, an old gameboy, a defective launch xbox, a launch ps2, a launch gamecube, and several other consoles.

Just because a title sells well certainly does not mean it is the greatest game ever. The Halo series has been a very good one (I have Halo 1 and 2, and will be getting Halo 3 with my next paycheck) but to put them in anyone’s top ten games ever? I sincerely doubt it. And anyone who does, is a fanboy.

When compared to other FPS’, console included, the Halo series wouldn’t make most people’s top ten lists. When compared to console FPS’, I would still put the Halo series behind games like Perfect Dark. Hell, Halo 3 isn’t even the best FPS on the 360 according to almost everyone I have spoken to (with the new CoD being the most talked about FPS and Bioshock right behind it).

Like I said before, the 360 has the best lineup among the three next gen consoles, but all-time? Hardly. The NES easily owns that honor (the final fantasy series, contra, metroid, Mario games when they were more fun, etc.), and I never owned one. Honestly, which 360 games are worth their price? To me, the only title worth its price tag is Forza 2. The rest of the games were either too short, or too boring. Gears of War was great for what it was, but it had a few glaring flaws that I could not get over (can’t duck out in the open for starters). And the other two systems, I honestly cannot name one title on either system worth owning right now(Metroid is good, not great), although Folklore will be a must-buy for me.

Personally I like Live, but that doesn’t sell the 360 to me. I have had Live since the beta days, and the service holds the same appeal to me now that it did back then, which is not much. Sony has their free service that I barely use too.

None of these next gen systems hold a candle to the originals.

Maybe it’s the rise in prices that has made me more critical of games, but I am getting sick of paying ~$60 for a title and not feeling like I got my money’s worth out of it.

In my opinion, last gen was way better than this gen, because the games were just plain better.

Well put! The thing that I find lacking in many next gen games is re-playability. I would play the older games over and over, but with the exception of a select few newer titles, once I finish the game I generally don’t play them again.

LOL, if I’m a fanboy of any gaming company it would be Sega, and since Sony basically put the final nail in their coffin, why would I be a Sony fanboy?
Any who, the Perfect Dark I was talking about was Perfect Dark, for the N64. That’s why I said Perfect Dark. If I meant Perfect Dark Zero, I would have said so.

Your reading comprehension needs some serious work.

I said, and I quote, “Hell, Halo 3 isn’t even the best FPS on the 360 according to almost everyone I have spoken to (with the new CoD being the most talked about FPS and Bioshock right behind it).”

When/Where did I say that Halo is not in the top ten on the 360? I said and I quote, “When compared to other FPS’, console included, the Halo series wouldn’t make most people’s top ten lists. When compared to console FPS’, I would still put the Halo series behind games like Perfect Dark.” I said Console FPS. Last time I checked the 360 isn’t the only console in the history of gaming. Again, reading comprehension is your friend.

The only thing Halo changed about console FPS’ was adding the online element. Other than that, what did Halo add, teabagging?

Jump buttons were always in FPS’
Sniper rifles were always in FPS’
    Shotguns were always in FPS’
    Grenades were always in FPS’
Rocket Launchers were always in FPS’
Jeeps and Tanks were in FPS’ (although Halo created the Warthog and I love that crazy ride)

If I am a Sony fanboy as you claim, what Sony fanboyism have I partaken in? Please, provide links to back up your accusations.

I said I am getting Folklore this week, but that’s hardly fanboyism, especially when I also said I am getting PGR4 and Halo 3 this week too (which happen to be 360 games).

Seriously Scotty, before you start making accusations, get your facts straight.

hell all people have to do is listen between the lines and they could tell you are a fanboy trying to stop the momentum that the 360 has with halo 3.to say that halo isn’t even in the top 10 games for fps is just laughable and plain bias.ipto youq
