PS3 Firmware Update v1.92 Available [Update]

PS3 XMB Image

Sony quietly dropped a firmware update late last night for the PS3, bringing it up to version 1.92. Early reports are that the XMB loads a lot faster. No concrete info has been given by Sony in the US, but here’s some of the other improvements being reported:

  • Controllers now auto power-off
  • XMB screensaver option now available
  • Internet Browser has been improved
  • Thumbnails in the Games and Videos section now load faster in the XMB
  • Exiting a game to the XMB is now faster and more efficient
  • PS1/PS2 compatibility updates
  • PS3 games compatibility update (specifically, Warhawk freezing fixed)

Sony in the UK has confirmed the PS1/PS2 compatibility updates, as well as the PS3 title performance issues (they didn’t mention Warhawk specifically). We’ll update you once SCEA releases an official change log.

[Update] SCEA just updated their website with the new firmware information. Basically, all they say is included is better PS2 compatiblity. I guess they’re going to be pushing these more frequently now that the 60GB version is almost sold out.

They seriously need to implement a way to send messages while in-game.
(unless there’s a way and this n00b doesn’t know it yet)

nostars - I’m being added in v2.0 (I’m assuming). This functionality was added in the v1.80 SDK (software developer kit) that was sent out in July. It’s most likely going to have to be implemented on a game by game basis.

That’s one thing I think Sony needs to change… require some of the features and make the PlayStation Network more unified.

Aw, because I hate getting messages while playing baseball and not being able to reply without quitting my game.

Quick impressions of the update: XMB is MUCH snappier. It looks like they’ve reduced the memory footprint based on the speed of everything now. I was previously confirmed that the memory footprint was greatly reduced with the v1.80 SDK, so they may have implemented that into the XMB now.

XMB stands for Cross Media Bar. It’s the dashboard interface on the PSP and PS3
