My PS3 Impressions so far

PS3 ImageI recently picked up a PS3 due to the price break, 5 free movies and wanting to see 300 on Blu Ray. I opted for the regular 60 gig version with no frills added and an HDMI cable (not included) over the new 80 gig bundle with Motorstorm for $599. After playing around with it and setting it up I have the following inital impressions:

- This thing is heavy!
- PS3 is whisper quiet, my 360 is ridiculously loud and even my Wii is louder
- The PS3 controller is feather light in comparison to other controllers due to the lack of batteries, this takes some getting used to
- PSN is pretty good and can match or even over take the other two consoles download netwokks, IMO
- HDMI was simple to hook up but expensive
- Downloading demos is awesome, it is interesting that you have to install them once you have downloaded them, which is different than the 360
- Six axis controller recognition works very well
- Resistance Fall of Man looks like a good shooter, very much a cross between COD and Halo
- Online play in Resistance with 32 players was lag free, this was very impressive
- Folding@Home looks interesting and confusing at the same time
- Looking forward to increasing my PS3 library with Stranglehold

Hopefully you didn’t purchase an expensive HDMI cable. As the signal is digital, as long as the signal reaches the set, you shouldn’t have any problems. For example I have tried expensive monster HDMI cables that are over $100 and compared them to $10 HDMI cables I got off ebay and didn’t note any difference.

Warhawk is going to be THE online game for me. After being in the beta, I’m beyond hooked. The mixture of air and ground combat is amazing.

    Two points about your impressions:

    1. I don’t like installing demos either. If you don’t perform the download in the background, it installs during the download.

    2. Please tell me you didn’t buy a Monster HDMI cable for a ton of money. You can get the same thing for $12 at monoprice.com :)

@Dave - you are correct. Unlike analog, there is no signal degredation with digital cables. You either get the signal or you don’t. So having all that shielding and stuff like you get in Monster cables is completely not necessary.

That being said, Monster is very very overpriced and you an get similar cables with the same components and shielding from Monoprice.com for insanely less money.

yeah, they probably should include something better than standard composite cables with the PS3. HDMI would be nice, but at least component.

@ Dave / Drunk - Monster cables are good cables, but only 1% of the population really gets the full use out of them. I’ve noticed that if I use a monster cable for playing guitar, the cable takes much longer to break then a standard cable since Its always moving around on stage and stuff when I used to play more. Also, if you are running a HDMI cable over 30 feet, you will notice a loss in signal or no signal unless you go with monster or another hi-brand cable. Other then that, the other 99% of the population can stick with monoprice.com
