Ruh Roh Raggy… time for the fanboys to come out and play. Mark Rein, the head of Epic, shared some info about DVD size with CVG.
Speaking at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival, Rein said: “We’ll compress some things. But you know, we may have fewer maps on the 360 version… Blu-Ray has definitely given us a lot of legroom.”
The Epic VP added, “If you think down the road, well maybe the next UT beyond this one, on Blu-Ray disc, we might fill the whole damn disc with all the cool stuff the mod makers make.”
Eek. That can’t be good. Between possibly no or little mods and fewer maps, the Xbox 360 version of UT3 looks to be very gimped.

Damn. This is getting kind of annoying. Why didn’t microsoft see this problem coming beforehand? This is getting ridiculous, its happened with PGR4 and now UT. Bah
SEE! SEE! All you xbox fanboys bashing ps3 and saying that Blu-ray is useless. Well, obviously it’s not. But that’s ok, I’ll enjoy my extra levels. Even though I am getting this one on my PC too.
@ CJ – I guess you are saying “I told you so.” LOL
=)
lol yeah pretty much
Well. At least I got 2 good summers out of my 360 while PS3 users were chilling with resistance and motorstorm.
Even though I hated PS3 for awhile, Sony is fixing their mistakes and the system will have a good selection of games to play with in summer ‘08 for all of us still in school. I may buy one if there is a game that is wicked that isn’t going to be out for 360. (possibly XIII Verses XIII)
Yet another reason why the PC is superior to you console fanboys! =D
I’ll just happily download all the free mods off the unreal forums, as I have for the past 3 versions of UT. When you guys catch up and can do that, go ahead and give me a call. 8D
Hey, I prefer PC over any console. I just don’t have the money to keep up with the requirements of like Crysis. I do enjoy a good RTS and FPS game though. But I think it’s going to be really cool that there will be cross-platform between the PS3 and the PC. Plus the extra maps and the possible mod making tools for a future UT.
Yeah man, I’m super psyched for UT3. Hell, I still hang out in my UT2004 clan’s IRC channel to this day, and we’re reforming for UT3’s release.
And as you said CJ, I’m looking forward to stomping…er, playing console players. Finally I can have some fun with my xbox 360 owning friends!
Lol XiD. Epic has said that with the PS3 only, users will most likely be able to download user created mods for the game. If this actually goes through with the PS3, I will be very jealous.
The reason why PC kind of is getting worse in my opinion, is that I always have to worry about if something is going to run, and how much a upgrade is going to cost if I need it. With a console, I just buy it and know that the games are going to run pretty well/good on it and look better then a med-range PC. And don’t give me that, “oh consoles break” thing. Sure the 360 has had problems, however I just got the 2 year warranty from bestbuy which costs like 40 bucks. But I’m sure its going to be worth it.
How are they going to create the mods? Through the ps3? rofl, good luck coding on that platform. Unless you have a full blown keyboard for your ps3, scripting will take ages. Even if some dedicated fan base decides to buy keyboards and use them with the ps3, that’s still very inaccessible to the average joe who might code a mod on his off time. Plus, how would teams collaborate through the ps3? Great mods are rarely a one person deal, it requires a team of individuals working together. Without the ease of voice chats, instant messengers, and easier transfers of beta builds, it will be a mega pain to develop something seriously in-depth. I just can’t see mods being built on the ps3 with any kind of practicality.
Otherwise, that leaves the computer for scripting and creating new mods. Unless the scripting is streamlined to be nearly identical between platforms (which it could, I’ll give you that), mods could be lost in translation going from PC to PS3. And do you think developers will really care if it doesn’t run on a system they don’t use?
Basically, the end point is that the mod community starts on the PC and pretty much ends on the PC. I doubt PS3 will have the flexibility or availability of mods that the PC has and always has had. I’d expect something like “official mods” that sony/epic declare worthy and then throw up to download, rather than giving you the freedom to simply download whatever you wish. But I digress…time will tell.
