So it looks like Nintendo has decided to give it’s Wii users a new update that looks to spruce up a few different things on the console. Some facelifts were given to the general page, which include a digital clock and now you can see the current weather without having to actually go into the channel. Aside from prettiness Nintendo also re-designed the Wii Shopping channel to make it more user friendly and also is addressing the whole modding scene.
You will get a Mod Chip Warning!
To me the best part of the update is Nintendo thumbing their nose at all the modders out in the world. You will be greeted by this message “IMPORTANT: If you do not wish to accept this upgrade you can shut down your Wii console … If your Wii console has an unauthorized technical modification, this upgrade could cause inoperability of your console.” And of course by “may” you know they mean it will wreck your modded system, well played Reggie. Nintendo is not taking modding lightly and looks to be incorporating “fixes” to dissuade people form modding, don’t be surprised to see SONY and MS follow suit as well with their own “system updates”.

Here is the official list of all the different changes:
Channels:
-Digital Clock added to the Wii Menu right under the channel bar
-Forecast Channel now displays the current condition directly in the Wii Menu in the Forecast Channel box
-News Channel can now show 2 scrolling headlines at a time in the Wii Menu, 3 when you click on the button
-Message Board now has the “Today’s Accomplishments” message as a white message which allows it to stand out from other messages
-Address Book entries can now be shifted around using A+B (supposed to be a launch feature) but only to empty spaces.
-Calendar in Message Board no longer shows “Today’s Accomplishment” only days as having messages.
Wii Shop Channel Overhauled

Write a Comment»I turned on my Wii this morning for the first time in over a month and updated the firmware. After I updated, I tried to check out the Wii Shop Channel. After I clicked the channel, it sat at a black screen for no less than 2 minutes before the channel loaded. I couldn’t do anything with the Wiimote during that time.
I’ll probably not turn the Wii back on until Super Mario Galaxy comes out. There really just isn’t anything there I want to play right now.
Oh, and I agree about the modding. I’m all for homebrew, but there is none on the Wii or Xbox 360… those mods are just for playing pirated games, which really hurts the industry.
As far as I’m aware, there’s nothing yet on the PS3 to allow for any pirated games. I think Sony allowing Linux to be installed on the system was a terrific idea as it allows homebrew users to legally go about things without touching the PS3’s actual system data and games.
Ironically I was playing with the Wii last night and I wasnt prompted for an update, this was about 1am East coast time, guess it wasnt available just yet.
Yeah I think it just came out around 6am EST.
I would really get on RE4, even if you played the older versions on PS2 and Gamecube.
The addition to the controls with the Wiimote really add a lot to the gameplay.
I do agree though that the Wii is really lacking in games.
