I have the Today Show on this morning, for God only knows what reason. They had a segment on about video games, again, who knows why.
The interesting part of the segment is that their “tech guru” told consumers to stay away from the Xbox 360 because of the massive hardware problems. He let everyone know that Microsoft issued a 3 year warranty extension amounting to $1 billion. The “tech guru” indicated that is is the same as a recall without the legal issues surrounding an actual recall. Microsoft would not confirm to him what is causing the hardware problems, but he advised all consumers to not buy an Xbox 360 until at least the end of the year.
Along with this, he strongly recommended the PS3 and Wii for their very high reliability and technological prowess. Letting everyone know the PS3 is a much stronger machine than the Xbox 360 and it’s recent $100 price drop, the “tech guru” encouraged users to grab one. He also talked up the Wii’s motion controls and innovative games, and also informed consumers of the high demand that’s still around.
It was actually a decent segment, better than I had expected. I wonder how much effect this will have on the Xbox 360? Millions of people watch the Today Show every morning. I’ll try to find a video later today and post it up for you.

Write a Comment»Wow, very damaging for Microsoft. More proof that they let the whole issue go on much much too long. Did they say the price drop was only for a soon to be discontinued sku? Did they say that the PS3 didn’t have a whole lot of good games yet?
I’m sure a lot of gamers were up this morning drinking coffee and eating scones watching this network bullshit. It was likely geared to parents to not but their kids presents. I get my news from Howard Stern and no one else.
They didn’t mention the discontinued SKU, nor did they mention anything about the PS3’s games. They did say the Xbox has great games like “Halo, Grand Theft Auto, and Madden”.
They also said the PS3 was the most powerful machine and can produce the highest quality graphics for games and movies (don’t flame me, I’m only reporting what they said).
sony paid em off for this lol
Finally someone outside the industry has spoken up. Microsoft really dropped the ball on this by not disclosing the issues (yet), ignoring us gamers for 18 months this is the result. The PS3 is twice as powerful as the 360 is no surprise as it is. I want to know what happened to Consumers Reports and the whole industry that tests these products for reliability before they are released to consumers? How could such a defective product like the xbox 360 get released anyway?
drunk pandas
heavenly sword demo the first AAA titel for ps3 came yesterday and the qual are insane. All we have seen so far is launch titels and ports which are extremly hard to port to the ps3.
4 our of 5 xbox friends have sold their xbox cause of this, generally ppl dont wanna touch the xbox.
” I get my news from Howard Stern and no one else. ”
I hope you were kidding
Wow. I really gotta watch the today show more often… This is great news. It’s about time Microsoft takes some reprocussions from the public eye. They have played this innocent money factory thing out. I’m also happy to hear the PS3 is finally getting some positive feedback from the media. And to come from a source like the today show… thats deep.
The fact that even the today show is now posting bad news on the 360 is starting to become b.s. What is this a elementary school playground fight? We have everyone picking on microsoft even though they still dominate with their 360 in the battle between Ps3 and the 360. Microsoft has claimed far more superior games so far and offers alot more on their marketplace and other program it presents. What does the Ps3 have? Blu-ray? Cause everyone around the world wants to spend 40$ to see a movie on their Ps3. And why be in such a rush to get a Ps3 now when one of their best exclusive titles include Motorstorm. ..Every system has their flaws but it all pin-points on the 360. why?
I’m sure gamers aren’t watching this show but the moms who will be buying a console this holiday season will be. Also I’m sure some shareholders were watching this…..Wow this can POSSIBLY be the end for the xbox division..i know it’s early to say…NO PROFITS, Bad image, no major signs of taking the market share…list goes on
This article is WRONG.
I have just watched the clip of the Today Show. That is NOT what the show said AT ALL. This article is WRONG and has misquoted (or more like blatantly MADE UP) what the show had said.
Here is the clip — you have to use Internet Explorer to be able to watch it:
http://video.msn.com/v/us/fv/msnbc/fv.htm??g=20d7c5cc-8c04-4d80-8fec-922fc0473476&f=05&fg=rss
Xbots relax………….i’m from Mauritius and I’m sure most of u americans never heard of this paradise island. just wanted to tell you that PS3 will be the dominant console again. Simple example is that here we all own a ps2 and we have around 1.7 millions of people which is nothing compared to the U.S but still if you count the amount of PS@ owners here it is hell of a lot. Now when PS3 becomes affordable for our pockets trust me we will go for it. We hate microsoft koz everything they do crashes………..Windows anybody? and i am sure the rest of the world thinks the same. Yesterday i read that 42% of Americans still plays their fav console the PS2. now when these 42% buys a PS3…………Sorry Xbots but I won’t go further koz it it no point.
As damaging as this would be if true, it simply isn’t. After viewing the video myself for confirmation, not once did I see what you were talking about. You either misunderstood his point, or purposely took it out of context. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt, and go with the first one.
-Gameboi
@ Ktchong - dude relax, ok our editor used a bit of hyberbbole when describing the segment but if you step back and look at the entire segment the tech guru really un-sold the public form buying the Xbox 360, the focus on the Xbox was about the problems it had, the other two systems were positive, there was a mention of stock shortages for the Wii, but thats it. He actually mentions that PS3 price was dropped to capitalize on the Xbox problems.
I will use a simple analogy for you:
If i show you 3 hto chicks and tell you that one has Aids, would you consider that telling someone to stay away? Shiet cuz I would! He doesnt blatenly ocme out and say it but the implications are there.
After viewing the video for myself, I fail to see where the guy says this. Yes he talks about the warranty extension, and failed consoles — but not once does he say anything about avoiding the Xbox 360. In fact, he even compliments the large selection of great games for the console.
As damaging as this would be for Microsoft (The Today Show has a huge audience), it was never said. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt, and assume you misunderstood what he was saying.
Why dont they tell everyone how to take care of there 360 to help prevent some of these problems.
(1) Dont move the machine with a disc in it and running so they dont scratch the disc’s. (Common Sense)
(2) Dont buy one for your 8 year old kidding thinking that it is a Super Nintendo (It isnt)
(3) No mention about the PS3 and how it generats enough heat to warm up your whole living room. Plus it isnt really a true game machine but more of a multimedia machine (Blue ray player).
I have had my 360 since launch and yes it died on me after about a year but they fixed it and it was back in my hands in less then a week. NO mention of that I am sure. Who really gives a crap what the TODAY SHOW says anyway. They arent gamers just some tech geek trying to bash Microsoft.
Long live the 360 and as far as I am concerned it is the best Game machine out there as of right now.
Never had an issue with either of my 360’s. The machine has performed as I expected.
Anybody remember the PS2 and all it’s problems. I went thru 3 of them. But it still ended up being the console of choice.
There is no doubt that this is a PR nightmare for Xbox. The more MS stay quiet on it the more room they leave the typical idiot on the street to paint his own picture.
If you want great games get an Xbox 360. If you want to watch movies and have an extra space heater get yourself a PS3. If you want to game like the elderly get yourself a Wii.
“Today Show Warns Consumers To Stay Away From Xbox 360″ This was never indicated in the video
http://video.msn.com/v/us/msnbc.htm?g=20d7c5cc-8c04-4d80-8fec-922fc0473476&f=05&fg=rss
Post your summary accurately next time…
Wow, are we a little bias here!?!?!
The Tech Guru did not advise people NOT to buy an Xbox 360. You need to watch that again or you better Guard your Jewels.
http://video.msn.com/v/us/msnbc.htm?g=20d7c5cc-8c04-4d80-8fec-922fc0473476&f=05&fg=rss
you beat me to it “Oh Rly”
Loot Ninja, where coming for your Jewels you moron.
@senile911 - sad dude, mocking our tag line is just childish.
If you watch the video though, the piece dwells on MS warranty for a large portion, PS3 gets a quick blurb how it is a cheap blu-ray player and the Wii actually gets played with, I thought that was the best marketing for Nintendo. MS really got the least favorable PR out of the piece, only thing he said was that it had a good game lineup, but again to someone that knows nothing about games this could sway them away.
If I try to sell you three cars but I tell you one will be in the shop and was almost recalled, would that keep you away?
@taz8080 - Well I guess your tag line is childish.
Quit with the analogies, they suck! To show they suck, if you where to sell me a car that I had the previous model and no other car could match it and I decide to upgrade it to the new HD paint but there have been a few problems with it, but it comes with a much better warranty than any other car and the features are still far superior than any other car, then yeah, I would still upgrade to the Xbox 360 car analogy and not stay away from it. By the time the warranty is up I would probably have a car that is the NEW Falcon with no more issues.
So quit with the analogy’s and quit spreading lies, just post the video if you want and let people hear what they have to say, you will last longer that way.
Finally

@ senile911 - you are the one attacking the tagline and calling the writer a moron. i never attacked you or your view. if your idea of intelectual conversation is to tell someone they suck then once again, pretty sad.
And people in glass houses should not throw stones, your analogy does not make any type of sense, it is long and drawn out and does not match up with the topic.
If someone is trying to sell you something and they start with something that can be perceived as negative, extended warranty due to problems and a possible recall (MS didnt extend it out of the goodness of their hearts) and you still keep that item on an equal playing field then you are making an unwise decision.
MS stepped up and took one on the chin with the warranty issues and it will cost them some money, but lets not mince words and try to make it seem like they did this because they love us or as part of a marketing strategy it is in direct response to all the negative feedback they have gotten about repairs. The 3 year warranty is is not an advantage, I would take a product with no waranty that is guaranteed to work, than somehting that may need returns and a lifetime warranty.
And let me also add the Xbox 360 is my favorite system and i do most of my gmaing on it.
Wait.
@taz8080 - Not to nitpick, but…and I quote, “I would take a product with no waranty that is guaranteed to work, than something that may need returns and a lifetime warranty.”. Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but if you bought a product that is guaranteed to work, and it broke, that means they would fix it…right? So, that would mean it was guaranteed with a warranty…right?
I’m not saying who’s wrong or right in your little argument with senile911, but the general consensus seems to be that this report was misinterpreted by whomever posted this.
@ Senile911-
There is a little thing called journalistic liberty or even poetic justice where people can draw their own conclusions and own deductions from what they see and write about accordingly. All 3 of us watched the segment and came to a similar conclusion and we both back our editor completely on his statements. Fox News and CNN will report on the same exact story and have different views and skew their opinions to their audience, with CNN being more liberal of the two.
While we do appreciate you reading and your comments, we do not appreciate you attacking our tag lines. If and when you have a website or some other media which to convey news, I will gladly scrutinize you, but with more tact. That’s what seperates you from the people who also disagreed, but did so in a manner befitting adults.
Godspeed.
This is what happens when someone who doesn’t know what they are talking about pretends to be someone who knows what they are talking about.
They take truth (the xbox 360 has had or does have hardware issues), then they smear shit all over it (their opinion), and out pops a News item.
Tech Guru my ass.
That “tech guru” is 100% correct. There is much evidence supporting this:
Fan returns his Xbox 360 12 times:
http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=40658
Xbox 360 is in the mire:

Just before he announced the Xbox 360 fault
http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=40956
Its pretty funny how misinformed most of you are (I will keep Nintendo out of this, all comparisons are between the PS3 and 360):
First of all, as a game console, with XBOX and their slew of MAJOR EXCLUSIVES, Microsoft has arguably the best software titles yet, and with Live on its SECOND generation of console, Sony is WAAAy behind for online gaming.
Secondly, when has Sony EVER done anything without profit at mind. Over the past year there have been numerous industry recalls and cover-ups directyl related to Sony. At least Microsoft extended their warranty to cover any flaw in design. With the conseption of the PS3, Sony has sold out and RAPED their consumers.
Thirdly, many major developers HATE developing games for the PS3. Its terrible to work with. Which is why many “exclusives” will be coming to 360 like Assassins Creed and Devil May cry, oh yea, and GTA IV, which will have exclusive content to 360 users alone, thanks to Microsoft spending 50 million to ensure their community exclusive content and experience.
I say, Microsoft, you f’in rock.
This report is buried as inaacurate
what a fucking retard!! people need to get hardware stats other than the developers them selves.obviously people who make games for a system aren’t gonna put down that system. people do your self a favour and go to a website like anandtech.com or wikipedia and educate your self a little bit more about hardware. That way you want be fooled.
as for x360 vs PS3 capabilities. they are currently very equal.neither has gone in to multithread programming so their CPUs are used in a manner similar to whats normaly done.and since they are both equaly competitive in GPUs the graphics will be similar.only advantage as of now for PS3 would be not having to compress there data.that said there are very good ways of compressing data anyway so wont be too much of an issue at all.
well said Scott Sauber. Its sad how needlessly aggressive the market is to X360.especialy in Japan but I think their ads have a lot do with it I think.some of the weirdest ads are japanese X360 ads.lmao
@ktchong
How is this article wrong? The article isn’t wrong. The guy didn’t say it using the exact words but he pretty much warned people to stay away from it.
what a truthful and honest mainstream assessment! just the kick in the nuts MS deserves for being so careless and strong-arming their way into gaming with a shit-load of moneys. unlike with windows the media and consumers are too well connected to let a product that crashes 33% of the time or more make its way into their lives permanently.

THAT IS SUCH BULL SHIT! The PS3 barely generates any heat, I had a controller sit right next to the vent and it barely even got warm… stupid xbox fan boys.
Sadly , i doubt this tech guru will have any affect on current sales.
If you really look at the news , Nintendo shares have been beating Sonys in Japan a few times in the past month or so. Nintendo clearly is winning this console war.
Playstation 3 is a joke from my stand. Its the most expensive , it has the least about of titles, and its not geared towards any market , but rather to just the masses aged 18-35. Most consoles using first -gen tech , usually fail in the first 2 years of production.. Can anyone remember what happened to the Sega Dreamcast, the Jaguar .. Sega Cd , etc etc etc.
The true is , most people watching the show are going to goto the store , ask some questions to someone that really doesn’t know much and get a system that is only purchased since the adult buying it , is buying it for there kids.
Xbox 360 , will continue to be a winner this round , considering it has taken such titles as the Ace Combat Series, Katamari Damancy , and GTA from PS3.
Sony needs to realise the fact is , this new tech in there system is great and all , but its way to hard to make games for at this stage.
Again nintendo 64 had this problem , and look how well it faired.. its the reason people went nuts for PS1 and PS2 at the time. Its why nintendo lost many good games to Sony. and its why Sony is losing so many good games to Xbox.
Mircosoft is being smart by not recalling systems. Its a waste.. i personally own a Xbox 360 , the first one i got was broken from shipping , least to say it was playable but i didn’t really want a system with a cracked shell. The second system has worked fine , not had one problem with it. Considering nintendo had the same problems with its controllers at first , and yes sony will have bugs and glitches with its system .. once people .. or i should say if people buy more of them. Having 1% of 1 million units not work isn’t that bad.
And anyone that thinks just cause people own a PS2 will buy a PS3 is wrong.
Considering PS2 and NDS are the top selling systems right now.
People want games , not dvd players, music players , book readers , coffee makers , red bull can coolers on there systems.
They just want games. ANd nintendo and xbox both are in the game right now.
Sony is just limping by , and falling.
“The PS3 is twice as powerful as the 360 is no surprise as it is”
No that’s completely wrong in many ways,
1. The PS3 does have an advanced processor but is very limited because it has 8spes and only 1 gp core. The 360 on the other hand has 3 gp cores, enabling it to do more wider range of activities. Also each core in the 360 have direct access to the system ram as with the ps3s spes, they do not.
2. Games generally only have 2-3threads. 1 for audio, 1gameplay and 1 possibly for misc jobs, ie packing network packets and sending them, receiving hid inputs. SPEs make writing games a bitch because to harness the full power you need to understand good thread management and need a well structured engine.
3. The 360 gpu is at the same level as the ps3s gpu.
4. The 360s gpu and cpu share the same ram, allowing the 360 to allocate what it needs to certain tasks. This can allow for a better loading system,(its even better cause m$ went with dvd instead of hddvd or bluray which = faster transfer rates due to a mature technology)
The PS3 and the 360 have their advantages, but tbh, the 360 was built for games, the ps3 was built to be in a render farm.
Sure, there’s been problems, but not every XBox360 is junk. Never had a problem with mine. One rechargeable battery I bought wouldn’t charge, but that’s it.
I had a Wii for a week ’cause it’s a bore if you play games alone. And there are hardly any games worth buying. It’s great when friends are over ’cause Sports is a blast with two or more, but anything else just makes the graphics look like garbage. You’ll spend half your time looking for things in the menus too.
I can’t imagine anyone spending money on that over-priced PS3. Why didn’t he mention that Sony lost money on it?
well the people who actually did that segment problaly know shit about video games. For my money it dosen’t get any better then the 360. The wii is fun, but its got shit for games, and shit for graphics, the ps3 looks nice but if you spend that much money on a councle you might as well build a gaming pc. The 360’s price is good, and they have great support. I had one issue with my 360 and I had it for 2 years, it was out of warranty, they sent me a prepaid box, and I got my 360 back later that week.
“Every system has their flaws but it all pin-points on the 360. why?”
It’s not about anything else than the fact that more than one third of the 360s have died with those cute red rings of death. Usually this has happened in just few weeks after purchasing the units. I believe the consumers have all the rights to know about things like this, especially if they don’t know too much about the consoles and videogaming. I’m probably ending up buying PS3 myself, even though I dislike Sony for many reasons, since I don’t want to buy stuff that keeps breaking up for no obvious reasons and I’d like to run Linux on my console as well. Or then I’m going to wait for those 65 nm 360s coming out, since I assume they won’t be heating up that much.
Anyways, it’s clear to all of us, that there has been a serious design flaw in the 360 and even though it’s hell of a good as a console, I’m just glad to know that the other consumers have been made aware of the fact as well. Now, if you’re wondering why I’m getting a next-gen console myself: GTA IV. No other reason, really.
This “Tech Guru” incorrectly stated twice that the PS/3 runs at a higher resolution. Both the 360 and PS/3 are capable of gameplay 1080p; however, 1080i is the same resolution as 1080p. Most of the time - the developers opt for 720p resolution due to its smoother framerate. Just thought I would mention as that statement was completely incorrect and make me think Mr. Pseudo Geek has a little learning to do.
I have had my xbox 360 since 6months from launch and never had any problems with it.
You, there, OUT OF THE GENE POOL.
NOW!
Xbox 360 has a ton of good games, PS3 has literally NONE, (Heaven Sword looks nice but it’s not out yet.) Xbox has incredible online support, PS3 has no online network. 360 has actively been pursuing companies to get either multi-platform support or exclusivity, Sony has been faltering (Look at Metal Gear, it’s probably going to be coming to both systems.) Microsoft has been doing every thing that they can for their consumers while Sony hasn’t even been releasing games. 360 is the way to go if you’re not retarded.
To add on to my previous comment, I just finished watching the video and there tech guy was a fucking idiot, and that’s an understatement. First of all, the Wii is the number one console, not number two, that guy’s a jackass. Second of all GTA is coming for 360 and PS3. Third of all 360 and PS3 can to 1080P. Goddammit that pisses me off that they can blatently state false information and not face repercussions. That tech guru is a fucking idiot. I only watched 3/4 of the video because I became to disgusted with his incompetence and falsities to continue watching.
fish0697…you have no idea what your talking about. if you have to actually give instructions to people so the 360 doesnt break is retarded but nice try!!!you paid over 500 dollars, you should be able to have a machine that doesnt break. i own a ps3 and i could toss it around and it still works completely fine!!!! if your going to bash it say something better than that!
i just dont see where microsoft and the 360 shine at ALL.
the ps3 has the better hardware and is soon to have better graphics. just look at ratchet and clank: future and kz2(which won an award for graphics even though it wasnt playable, while that was a requirement).
microsoft, while having good graphics (and games), doesnt have much room to improve in that area. it has hardware problems, a paid live subscription, the core model holding games back, it uses dvd9, it doesnt come with a hi-def player, wireless adapter, or hdmi input(ok, well the elite does but it wasnt out when i got one) the gaming division has only lost a TON of money, and now a bunch of moms just saw a news segment on how the 360 breaks and not to buy them until NEXT YEAR.
just sayin’. if you spend that much money on a video game, you might as well look into the future and get a ps3, since the only thing it has going against it right now is the lack of games, and that will ALWAYS change with time.
@ PS3 is terrible
“that pisses me off that they can blatently state false information and not face repercussions.”
Choose your repercussions, Master Hypocrite.
1.”Xbox 360 has a ton of good games, PS3 has literally NONE…..” You can’t be serious?
2.”PS3 has no online network…..” Even allowing a little journalistic license, this is not even remotely correct.
3. “Microsoft has been doing every thing that they can for their consumers…..” Microsoft is indebted to their shareholders as all major corporations are, don’t delude yourself.
4. “Sony hasn’t even been releasing games”. …. again you can’t be serious!
WOW… take a deep breath and read what you write BEFORE you hit the submit button! Of course I only read 3/4 of your post(s) because my hypocrisy alarm was deafening! I hope you see now, the very thing you are complaining about, you are guilty of. With a little self control and some facts you may be able to further a good discussion about the merits of your console of choice. However until then, you are just peeing into the wind my friend.
Most Sincerely,
DarkKnight

Wow, a today show fanboy (Classless)
If the joke of a guru was really looking out for the public interest, he would have given pros and cons on all consoles and also mention that the new MB, heatsink, and chipset was already in shipping units or at least shipping soon.
Sounds like dude needed some extra cash or to validate the fact that he owns a PS3. So sad.
Ok, first of let me say i have had the xbox 360 since launch. I was one of those people who stood in line all night to get one. Since then it has been less than 2 years til the anniversary of the xbox 360 and im going on to my 7th xbox 360 console. I have had the red lights of death on every other xbox 360 console i have had. With that said i have repeatedily stood up for xbox and have bashed sony but now the tables have turned. Just because some of you people have not had this happen to you, does not mean your xbox 360 will not break, trust me i thought mine wouldnt either, but it has( way to many times). And just because the xbox 360 has (achievements) and gamerscore, everyone acts like its the best system ever, well its not. It’s a gimmick people, not to mention if you want a hd-dvd you have to buy that seperately, hmmm, ps3 comes with blu-ray(sounds fair doesn’t it). By far microsoft may be winning the console wars but the only reason is because people dont know The Truth. So take it from me( a gamer with over 100,000 gamerscore) i have stuck by this system since the beginning but now its going right where it should…..right in the f’ing TRASH!
DarkKnight, you can’t say what PS3 Is Terrible said is false…Microsoft stock is doing just fine. PS3s don’t have any GOOD games unless you count ummm… actually, I don’t really think you can count anything Sony has out that is good right now or worth it. Plus, you call him hypocritical, but you never say why… Hmmm now that’s kind of strange eh? You Sir, need to calm down, just because the truth is too hard to bear for you, doesn’t mean you have to start accussing people of hypocrisy for no reason.
BTW: When someone is hypocritical, it means that they are guilty of the very thing they complain about… Facts that you think are false arn’t always hypocritical.
