E307: Loot Ninja’s Sony Press Conference Thoughts

e3.jpgSony finished off E3 with the last press conference from the three console manufacturers. And just how did they do? There were some new game trailers, the announcement of the new slim PSP, and some new games (click here for more in depth coverage).

So what did everyone here at Loot Ninja think of the press conference? Read on to find out.

drunk pandas: Sony came into E3 on a slight high after announcing the $100 price cut of the 60GB PS3 and announcement of the 80GB model. They had a lot to prove to fans and the industry, as the negative press surround the PS3 was quite strong. This year, we got to see a lot of Jack Tretton, and less of Krazy Kaz Hirai.

Sony came out gunning with games, games, games, and games. That’s what the fans and industry wanted to see, and that’s what Sony delivered. There was some more details about Home, introduction of some new great games, and new videos of some AAA tiles coming later this year. Kaz Hirai, in the one time he took the stage, introduced a new slim PSP. Not exactly the redesign everyone was looking for. No internal hard drive, no dual analog sticks, just slimmer, lighter, and now with video out.

There were definitely a few pieces missing from Sony’s press conference. No announcement of a rumble SIXAXIS, no details on the video download service that was briefly announced. Maybe we’ll hear more at the Tokyo Game Show in a few weeks. But I think Sony intentionally left this information out to put the focus on the games.

Sony had the most to prove, and they definitely proved it with their press conference. The games they showed looked beautiful and will definitely move systems. Overall, they had the best showing of E3. While Microsoft sat back and relaxed, and Nintendo focuses on the mass market instead of the gamer, Sony really focused in on what the gamers wanted to see: great games.

Kudos to Sony for stepping it up and continuing their PR high with the press conference. Too bad everything got marred by information leaking on Friday of the 60GB PS3 being discontinued in the US.

taz8080: Sony definitely came out swinging and in my opinion was the clear winner of the E3 announcements. SONY talked up their title sand their exclusives, announced their new PSP and had price cuts earlier in the week. They definitely made the splash in the water for this E3. Too bad the news of the demise of the 60Gb version occurred, but hey you can’t win em all.

fierce Scuba: I wanted to sit back and really watch the E3 one more time and let the fervor die down before making my assessment on any of the big 3.  I have to say, and it pains me to do so that Sony was far and beyond the best of the 3. I am a MS first everyone else second, I will admit that, but Sony had the most to prove coming in and they really did it.  The Sony Home piece was a little boring but necessary, but they showed a ton of gameplay, trailers, and Killzone pretty much blew everyone away.  The PSP stuff was also on point and it seems that they are really trying to control both the console and handheld market.  The new Ice Silver PSP was gorgeous I might add.  All in all, I have not planned on getting a PS3, but that may very well change in the next few months.

Now, why was Microsoft’s conference so amazing? They showed off stuff that everyone already knew about. Nintendo is the only one actually showing off NEW stuff. Even if you’re not impressed by it, Microsoft and Sony continue the same old thing. “We believe motion control is a gimmick, but you can bet your bottom dollar our next console will have it.
