There’s some distinct similarities between Prey and The Darkness, both published by 2K Games, as pointed out by John Davison over at 1up.
Both games surround the use of special powers and dealing with how to use them (Darklings in The Darkness, Talon and Spirit Walking in Prey). There’s also some very deep revenge issues tied into the story lines.
I don’t want to get into all the specifics right here, because there’s some major spoilers involved, so hit the jump to find out all the similarities.
- Both games have underdeveloped girlfriends (Prey especially)
- The main characters girlfriends die in both games
- The name of the girlfriends in both games is Jenny
- Tommy/Jacky look pretty much the same (cut, long hair,) only one is Italian and one is Indian/Native American
- Both games end with a dialog sequence between the main character and their dead girlfriends in a spiritual/dream world
- Both main characters inherit a supernatural power from their ancestors
- Both games you’re assisted by your grandfather (although The Darkness it’s his great-great-great-grandfather, or something) both of whom shed light on the powers passed down through their ancestry. They’re both dead when these explanations occur
- Both games move between a real world and another world – the only difference is that Prey’s is a peaceful place, and the Darkness’ otherworld isn’t, but both are linked to the main characters’ supernatural powers
- Both main characters die throughout the story and are brought back to life
- Both lead characters have animals/monsters to help them throughout the game (Talon/Darklings)
- The motivation for both of the main characters is revenge
Yeah, that’s a BIT too much in common with these 2 games that are only about a year apart from the same company.

Well, The Darkness is based on a comic book from Top Cow that has been around for quite a while. I don’t know what the history with Prey is.
Hey when you havea formula stick with it heheheh this doesnt make me want ot play The Darkness though, I was not a big fan of Prey.
