There has been some waves made around in some Xbox360 forums lately about a possible cause for massive system failure. Turns out, according to this official tech support report that the power brick is itself a surge protector and we as an owner should NOT plug the power brick into any further surge or extension cords. I took 2 years of engineering physics and basically have Ohm’s Law tattoed on my ass, and I do not see a reason why this should be any concern. The ventilation thing, yeah, no brainer. The surge protector? No, I do not buy that. The more electrical resistance against any kind of power surge should not be an issue. Is this another cop out by The Man saying its the consumer’s fault that so many 360’s are making the stock of UPS go through the roof? What do you guys think?

Sounds like a crock of.. excuse the language.. shit.
Oh you’re right. It’s a huge crock of shit. Any out they can find to tell people they broke the terms of the warranty.
LMAO so M$ are saying its our own fault!. If i scratch my head any more i will be picking my arshole
Its interesting, especially when that repair company in the UK that refuses to repair more 360s that have the “ring of death” said pretty clearly that there is a problem with the 360’s motherboard and that unless Microsoft revises the mobo there’s no way to stop the problem and that even their repairs are not satisfactory in the long run…
Unless Microsoft gets their act together and stop playing the clown, I’m going PS3.
Blaming the costumer is quite normal when a company or service can`t reach it`s desired goal, the problems with the xbox 360`s that default, is that the thermal geography inside the box is too uneven. Resulting in some of the components defaulting becouse of stress and over heating.
xbox360 lol what a joke
LOL!!!!
How do you like that M$ fanboys?
Your beloved X-Box360 is a pile of shit
and to add insult to injury, M$ is blaming YOU!!!!
Pathetic losers, the PS3 is the console that will
come out on top.
hold up its because microsoft wants 2 double up on there sales by making everybody buy 2 xbox360 xbox360 is now build 2 last a few months
I got many friends with 360`s and no one of them have had any problems with their boxes. I have never got the “red ring of hell/death/fire” or what the f*** they call it anyway.
And I think that has one reason. We love our boxes and we take care of them:)
Maximus.. you need a girlfriend. And if you do have a girlfriend, She needs a new Boyfriend, Cause you’re unstable my man.
Yo Chase…
Sounds like the same thing Sony did for PS2 doesn’t it????
I haven’t had ANY problems with my 360.
Let me count how many problems I had with my 2 PS2s… tooo many.
It makes sence, if indeed they are recieving 1500-2500 XB360’s per day… what else do you expect… accountability??
I believe a regional recall should be pushed, without any chances or waitting. After all M$ has had two years to work out all the problems instead of saying “everyone loves the box”… right!
I bought a XB360 at launch, infact I waited all through the night for one outside Walmart and after I recieved it and took it home.. I had my money back within 4 hours because it didnt work.
At first I was not critical on this point, after all this is the first wave of hardware and theres lible to be some issues at first…. .. two years later..wow!!
Sure the PS3 is expensive but you get more for your money AND it doesnt break!
I’ve had my power brick surged through a surge protector believe it or not and had to have it replaced. It took four days for me to receive a new one but i got it. So this in essence is bull because of the fact that it can be surged and will not protect your 360.
@ Maximus:
Fanboy is a term used to describe an individual (usually male, though the feminine version fangirl may be used for females) who is utterly devoted to a single fannish subject, or to a single point of view within that subject, often to the point where it is considered an obsession. Fanboys remain loyal to their particular obsession, disregarding any factors that differ from their point of view. Fanboys are also typically aggressive and hateful towards the opposing brand or competition of their obsession regardless of its merits or achievements.
You my friend are the above. Thanks for reading.
Hey, if we never turned them on they wouldn’t overheat. If we never put our brand new games into the drive, they wouldn’t be scratched. If we never bought their product we would never feel ripped off. Ultimately, it is our fault.
I can only play the XBox 20 minutes at a time, at the most. It will overheat, and tell me my game disk is no longer readable????? If I keep the recharge cables plugged while playing a game (PGR3), the screen goes crazy and there are a lot of red blotches on the screen???? My wife loves it. It keeps me from spending hours lost on Final Fantasy, God of War, Jak & Daxter, Spyro, Ratchet & Clank or Kingdom Hearts, as I have with Playstation products. I guess it works for Gears of War, as I can’t play 15 minutes without feeling a little dizzy. I can’t use my, I’m looking for a save point excuse anymore. Honey, could you do this after your done with Dead Rising. Ohh… oops. Looks like Microsoft decided for you. Get to work!!
Okay, so where is the official press release to support this story. Blog, blog, blog. But lately no one has supporting documentation about anything that they say. And everyone else just like lemmings just jump on the bandwagon and follow alone.
Whatever happen to people supporting the Bullsh!t with facts. I’m taking this one with a grain, no a pound of salt.
I have had my power brick plugged into a UPS/Surge protector since I got it and have had no problems whatsoever. Whatsoever!
Please correct me if I’m wrong, but this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906102 which was included in the above article says nothing about a UPS CAUSING the problem. It say not to use a powerstrip or surge protector, but it never said it’s the problem. Eliminating things from the mix is a standard troubleshooting technique.
Also, what’s with this “my friend” (Forum link in the article) BullSh!t can’t your friend speak for himself. (Another fanboy tactic to make something out of nothing.)
I am amazed at the level to which people will stoop to give something or someone a bad name. Incredible.
i got an xbox360 played lost planet for 2months then it started frezzing i got my money back and the store i got it from said alot of are having the same problem they are returning them
30% of xbox360 fail
Where your source for that… huh Chase?????
The ‘Tech report’ on your link says nothing about power surges. Its about why the light on your power supply is orange. And of course they advise to ‘Plug the power supply directly into a known good wall outlet’ and of course they advise you to no use a shitty extension cord.
Nothing to see here people – go home.
dont worry i bet microsoft is coming out with an xbox720 next year
lol
Come on xbox fans there are so many reports of 360 failure and the result is they BLAME you. MS hah they are the biggest unprofessionals i think they failed they may be good software developers but hardware is not there business if it is they should have come to a fix by now so many complaints ps3 is stable on the other hand MS want t earn money i think by simply ignoring problems and chrge money by repair they should have at least released 65nm by now people still love their xbox wow i must say they deserve some reward huh if some of you have not come across with any problem with 360 THEN CONGRATS YOU ARE LUCKY ONES you cant ignore others agony and pain.MS must have set the life of 360 a max of 18 months bcause they released it in a hurry just to have a head start i m feeling sorry for you MS.
BUY a ps3
I am about to go on my third and to the people who say that “I take care of mine so it hasn’t broken” bullshit. Mine sits under my LCD and has never moved and it’s broken twice, their crap. Microsoft needs to step up and take accountability for this massive massive problem!
People complain about the price of the ps3 but in the end when they get a 360 the end buying like 2 to 12 more consoles. So if u can go out and buy another 360 because yours broke because Microsoft sucks. Then you can buy a Ps3 that doesnt break and is gonna have a awsome lineup of games this year.
We’re all on the same side here.. 360 users are pissed off. We certainly aren’t in need of any1’s pity
thank you willam for being truthful
@ Teekey………you are so ignorant and naïve…..”we don’t get problems cos we love our boxes and we take care of them”.
You cannot avoid a design flaw by “taking care of your console” – the inherant nature of a ‘design flaw’ is that it is there whether you like it or not.
You and your friends are in the percentage of people that don’t have problems – it’s all probability, so do us a favour and go back to school please.
I just recently called the tech support for my issues and the tech I had said that any if you had problems and it was plugged into another surge protector, those problems should be resolved by plugging directly into the wall. Needless to say, if they aren’t resolved then the problem was not caused by plugging into another surger protector.
people i have bought several 360 systems for family and I have had a couple of red light issues, nothing that i had to send it back to MS. I have been a sony fan since the ps1,but due to sony releasing the ps3 late, losing exclusive rights to big name games(MGS4) oh yea if u did’t know. And having to wait for thier online service sucks to. Maybe in a couple of years they will be up to par, But until then I will stay on my 360!
@ dogdirt2000 – You are absolutely correct. I beyond baby my consoles. Never had a problem with my Wii or PS3 (my PS3 is on at least 8-10 hours every single day playing games or Folding@Home). My Xbox 360 is no different. It’s on it’s own shelf in my entertainment center with full ventilation from the front and back. The power brick sits on the shelf in the back full ventilated as well. It never gets moved, shook around, whatever you want to say would cause problems. With all that, I’m on my 7th Xbox 360. Yes, you read that right, my 7th console. I’ve NEVER had a console die on my (aside from the Sega Genesis that my cousin threw across the room). There are some major design flaws with the Xbox 360, and Microsoft doesn’t want to spend the money to go back to the drawing board and address them.
[...] we’ve had some talk and uproar about the problems with the Xbox 360 lately, I figured we’d ask you, our loyal readers, how [...]
Next MS cop out will be, “You’re not suppose to turn on the 360.” or ” You’re putting XBox 360 game DVD’s into it?”
My 360 got a red ring once.. coz the video cable wasnt plugged in. It still scared the crap out of me though ^_^
Personally I am still on my first 360 and it’s going strong… Spewing for Microsoft though because personally if I had heard about all these problems back when I first decided to get it I probably wouldn’t have.
Although for some reason there isn’t much of a problem with 360’s where I live. I had a lan on Friday night and we had about 6 360s there, none had ever broken down or been replaced. Our 360s even lasted through the hot Australian christmas, we were playing Gears of War system link games all day when it was over 40 degrees(Celsius) outside and I didn’t have air conditioning running.. when I look back now that was pretty risky hahah.
If my 360 does die now I’ll be happy to replace it because I have played it for truly countless hours already and there are so many games I want Gta/mass effect/bio shock etcccccccc. I can tell you right now my cousin with 2 ps3s has only finished one game on his console and I have never ever seen him playing online even though he has adsl2 .
OH FOR CHRISTS SAKE this is a troubleshooting guide for the POWER BRICK. THATS IT. Jesus you people are lame.
[...] Thanks to Loot Ninja for finding this. digg_url = ‘http://www.lazygamer.co.za/xbox-360/dont-plug-your-360-into-a-surge-protector/’; digg_title = ‘Don’t plug your 360 into a surge protector’; digg_topic = ‘gaming_news’; [...]
As much as I love playing on my 360, I will be the first to sway anybody away from that pile of crap. If MS wants to win more consumers over then perhaps they should make a better console. Lets try spending more money on hardware as we do on software… Ok MS?
My 360 is running strong. It is plugged into a surge protector which in turn is plugged into a UPS (not the shitty shipping/delivery company).
Same here I’m on my first and only xbox 360. I bought it the first day it came out. I also know a bunch of people with an xbox 360, they have no problems at all. I have never witnessed any sort of “red ring”. I hear only of this “red ring” on the internet, as well as all of these other problems people are having. If these problems are true, then it sucks to be you. I guess me and the other 12 people I know with xbox 360s are just lucky ones that havent had any sort of problem with these consoles.
I am on my second system, the first would just decide to freeze whenever it felt like. My second one began to do the same so I invested in a cooler fan and it has been running fairly well. It still does a freeze here and there when it feels like it, the sad part is that we are all accustomed to this, just like windows, everyone expects ot have to reboot at least a few times a year for no apparent reason, but we accept it and smile. I have to say that all of my older systems, PS1, PS2, Xbox, Dreamcast, GB, GC, never had any issues. I do remember having issues with my old NES and the cartridges, having to blow in them and do a rian dance in front of the console to get metroid to boot up, are we at that stage with our new consoles as well… maybe i should just blow on my CD’s before inserting them or dance in fron of my 360 for osme added luck?
Not sure if this has been covered already, but…
If you actually read the support page instead of jumping to conclusions you’ll see they aren’t blaming the 360 issues on people plugging their power supply into a surge protector. It’s simply a safeguard in order to eliminate all outside factors that could potentially lead to a problem (troubleshooting common sense). It only has to do with power supply issues too, not problems with the console itself.
This is just further proof that people make up all kinds of crap and that the “360 issues” problem is blown way out of proportion. Very shitty “reporting” going on here.
What a load of crap ! M$ is a joke when it comes to the 360 sucking so much. They should learn how to fix it and not blame use like morons.
[...] I wrote an article about the Xbox360 and its supposed failure due to the power brick being plugged into other surge [...]
I know a guy who was told by a MS tech support guy this very thing. It somehow messes with the supposed built in surge protector inside the power brick. The guy stated that this warning is even mentioned in the owner’s manual. So, whether it’s true or not for the failure of the 360, they’ve been saying it all along.
I purchased an xbox360 and since then i have been on the phone to support in India or where ever three times. Every time I called they gave me temporary solutions to my problem. I only use the console for games. I dont download, play music,or anything else for that matter. Even with this knowledge they told me to format my hard drive twice. All this $$$ all this GB and my game is causing these issues with loading at a snails pace. Sorry it not corrupted data ive tried other games and tech support runs down the same list of bull____. I couldnt get them to just take my word for it and process a repair. My question Is Instead of complaining to eachother. Why doesn’t everyone write to M$? And when they release there next piece of ____ dont camp out at the ____ing store dont buy one???
Alright. I’m just going to say some things really quickly that aren’t biased, even though this thread is REALLY old.
This is Microsofts second system, and they are having a bunch of problems with it. If you compare them with Sony’s first 2 systems, they both had problems.
PS1: Who remembers having to turn your system when it was loading a game because sometimes it wouldn’t load a game?
PS2: The disk errors, the disk errors. I was plauged by the system not being able to read CD’s. And guess what? I didn’t buy a Xbox because I liked the PS2 better, and it had better games.
My point is that even though the PS3 is a MUCH more reliable system, that won’t make me buy it because if it doesn’t have any good games (past 2 summers), then I would rather buy a 360 because I’ll be able to play fun games, at the expense of having a greater chance of it breaking.
I picked up my 360 in April of ‘06, which provided me with 2 great summers of games. If I bought the PS3, that probably wouldn’t be the case (but I don’t know since I don’t own one). My other reason for buying the 360 is that ALL of my friends have them. I have a facebook group of the kids that have xbox live in my school and out of around 600 kids, I think there are at least a good 30 that have 360, while not that many have PS3’s.
Both systems have their perks, so I’m not saying one is better than the other, its all opinion here.
I had a xbox since day one and nothing ever happend to it. I’ve converted to the xbox 360 since day one of it’s release, and until july 07 i just got those red demon lights so I sent my xbox out to get repaired and m$ paid for it all how nice. Ok it took a month and a half for me to get it back, they say they sent me a refurbished system and now here it is Nov. and what do u know the same thing is accurring and what they say oh were sorry we will send you out a shipping box AGAIN………………….. Ok here we go again most likely another month and a half with out my xbox360 this is not good I just bought 4 new games in the last month and a half and this is the thanks I get. and much as I love the system I might have to UPGRADE to the PS3.
I have had 3 different xbox 360’s and now on my fourth. I have a buddy that has went through two, and a nephew that has went through two. My fourth one has just stopped working, and the ps3 sitting right beside it has set beside all four of mine, and was there first. They all got the exact same care. Except that the ps3 gets played a whole lot more, sooo whoevers theory it was about not taking proper care of it, I hate to say but you are almost as ate up with shit as much as the dumbasses that build the junk ass 360’s! PS3 rulz PERIOD!!
