The fine folks at PlayStation.Blog let us know that we can expect a minor firmware update to the PS3 in “the next few days”, bringing the console to v1.82.
The update would add the ability to playback AVC High Profile (H.264/MPEG-4) files on the PS3. Note, this does not mean all your DiVX and XViD files are magically going to work. Things need to be encoded properly, but it’s a step in the right direction for Sony.
I would expect either a Thursday or Friday release this week, since that’s how Sony usually rolls.
