Major League Gaming had a recent tournament involving Gears of War for the Xbox 360, and quickly realized a major flaw in the multiplayer portion of the game that allows cheating from all parties.
Similar to what happened (and was quickly patched) in CounterStrike, Gears suffers from what is known as ghosting. When a player dies in Gears, he is forced to sit out for a delayed period of time before he can respawn. However, the eliminated player can move around the map as a spectator, which allows them to see where the enemy is hiding. This information is then communicated to teammates still participating in the game.
According to GotFrag:
Major League Gaming didn’t see this coming and lacked the necessary admins to spot ghosting so they just allowed all teams do it. This drastically changed the game. Teams were often seen having their first player dead scrolling around the map views to spot opposing players and calling out his position.
Who knows if Cliffy B and Epic will patch this for ranked matches. CounterStrike uses a unique method called Fade to Black, which shows a black screen to players who have been eliminated, thus preventing them from cheating. Gears needs a feature like this.

What really ticks me off about gears of war is that you can’t play ranked matches with friends anymore. Usually, when I’m playing CS:S or Halo, I like to play with friends. Playing GoW unranked isn’t as fun, because people can come and go as they please.
In my opinion, Epic should make a mode that is ranked, and lets you join up with friends. Halo has done fine by letting people join up together, so I think Gears should too.
Also, I’m just throwing this out here. “the eliminated player cause move around the map” I think cause should be changed to “can.” I may be wrong, just pointed a small error out.
Thanks for pointing that one out. Had a rough night last night, so typing skills have gone downhill
But how can you talk when your dead i can only talk to the other team and my team that dead?
I think thru like VOIP proggies on their pc’s. Not entirely sure
In big contests like this, and even on Live where people want to cheat for Achievements and ranking, if there’s a way to gain even the slightest edge, people are going to take it. Whether they have a skype conference going or what, who knows, but if there’s a way, trust me, cheaters will find it. I mean, hell, look at everything you need to go through to boost in Halo 2? You have to standby your modem and everything, and people go through all that trouble just to have a higher rank
