Update: The Top 5 Video Game Controllers of All Time

atari-2600.jpgLast week, Cnet released its opinion of what the Top 5 Video Game Controllers of All Time are. I have to be honest, I do not agree with their list whatsoever.

You can link above to the full article, but here is their list.

Update: The list seems to be in no order whatsoever, but feel free to rank them as you see fit or give us an entirely new list as some readers already have.

Xbox360 Controller

PS2 Controller

N64 Controller

SNES Controller

Atari 2600 Joystick

Sweet list guys, you basically picked a controller from each generation.  Granted the Atari got it all started, but come on.  That thing was so fragile, it would break every time I jumped in Moon Patrol.  As far as the SNES, didn’t that evolve from that NES thing that came out in the 80’s?  I remember reading how the N64 controller was the worst idea since poop flavored lollipops when it was first released, yet it cracks the top 3.  Someone should tell these people that were other systems out there.  Intellivision, Colecovision, I mean the Xbox controller was almost a rip from the Atari Jaguar minus the stupid keys.  Let us know what you think so we can make a respectable list.

  1. Yeah that list is fairly dumb.

My personal favorites as the best, most innovative, and most influential: Genesis 6-button controller, SNES, PS1 Dual Shock, Xbox 360, and the Wii controllers (Wiimote, Nunchuck, etc).

I’m an xbox360 owner and i love the controller, but the Dpad surely can’t put it in 1st place.

  3. Man I dont agree with this list, i also like the 360 controller but ot call it the best is a bit out there, that D pad is quirky. I perosnally vote for the original NES controller, that thing stood the test of time, I used to use it to lodge into the system to play games better. ANd I see no love for inovation for the Dreamcast controller with the VMU’s, that was an interesting idea that was pretty kool for sports games.

    1. Xbox 360 Controller (They took their older controller that had some annoyances in it, and produced a great controller, with a better D-Pad then the PS2 controller)

    2. PS2 Controller (Pretty much the revolution of ruble controllers *if you don’t count the N64 thing* and made good use of combining a analog stick/d-pad)

    3. Original NES Controller (While it was a simple layout for a controller, the whole concept behind the d-pad and A and B buttons was a very effective layout for old games, and that same scheme carried on into the genesis, except they added a C button)

    4. Nintendo Wii Controller (Very innovative controller, the only reason that it is down here at four is because of the many mishaps that have happened because of the use of the controller)

    5. Dreamcast Controller (I didn’t have a chance to use that controller too much, but I do remember the VMU’s slightly. I kind of remember they could be used with a sonic game or something. Good controller as well.

By the way guys, I actually have a correction for the post.

“Thanks for all your comments, peeps. We should have made it clear that the list was in order of date, from oldest to newest, so we’re not saying the Xbox 360 controller is the number one ever, just the best at the moment.”

I think that means the list is flipped around.

    1. Xbox 360
    2. PS2
    3. N64
    4. SNES
    5. Atari 2600

  6. @ Frag:

Thanks for the info; after carefully reading the post again it looks like they are in no order, simply the best five. Albeit, I still think their list sucks, but I do appreciate you pointing out the error to me without the usually flaming people get for something like that.

    Thanks and keep reading!
