We’ve had numerous reports coming in of users getting 3 red lights on their brand new Elite consoles this morning. While this is a daily occurrence with 360 Premium and Core systems, we thought Microsoft would have had a better handle on the situation with the Elite.
We’ve all seen the pictures of the motherboard changes. I assumed that these would protect the console better from heat and such to make sure less consoles would die. But alas, no. Microsoft has introduced another new product that is failing at a higher than normal rate.
To top it all off, the disc scratching issue is back. Seriously Microsoft, what the hell? Did you completely get rid of your QA department?
I am having the same problem with mine, I just sent it for repairs. this is really pissing me off.
ok the xbox 360 has some problems but at least it has games and good grafics. the ps3 has almost no new games and the new games they have are either shit or they are almost the same as the ps2 games. i was thinking about getting a ps3 cause of all of the “problems” with the elite and then i did some resurch. first the over heating problem, easy to solve dont cramp ur xbox or keep it sideways like in the video and and spend the extra 30$ for a cooling station. second the disk eating problem, dont shake ur xbox while playing and dont play the bk games thats just dumb. those are the main problems i found and the rest of em were so rare it wasent even funny.
What???…..What if you went and bought a new car, not just any car but the top of the line model..lets say its a Hummer….and after you got it home with all the new features….the maker told you oh by the way dont take your Hummer off road that makes it mess up….oh…and dont drive your
Hummer this way cuz thats bad as well. oh and spend some more money on it so it works better not much just 3000… k?… By the way there are some other problems to….but those are so rare….it aint even funny….if you were told this by the maker you might drive the thing back through the window….OR..just send youe Hummer back and we’ll fix it so even though you have to drive to work and wont have it for 2-3 weeks..MS also told me not to put “xbox”….or…”Microsoft”…on the outside of the package or it might get lost????….damn….

this happened to me today. i own an elite and i think its from leaving it on too long and overheating. but for me i dont see disc unreadable i just hear the noise of it eating my disc and then it says open tray as if there is no disc inside. i`m so glad i bought a warrenty from the store so i dont have to deal with microsofts horrible warrenty. instead i will get a brand new elite.

Weeks before he announced an “unacceptable number of repairs” to the Xbox 360, the Microsoft executive in charge of the video game console sold US$6.15 million worth of company stock, or about 20 percent of his holdings.
According to regulatory filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s entertainment and devices division, sold 200,000 shares in four transactions between May 3 and May 30. The total take: more than $6.1 million.

i got my 360 back from ms….well its not mine they couldnt fix that one…lol…so they sent another one….i put my HDD on to this new unit and popped in oblivion…and to my surprise i had no body????. just a head and some feet and a bow….and even tho i loaded the game where i last left off….which was on a quest in the shivering isles…..i was in the capitol city!!!….soooo…..i had to download all my oblivion content again….and loose alot of information after the fact…stuff i already bought from a given place was no longer available to buy again because i already bought it…i suspect there is a small amount of memory in the box too…lol….BUT!!! i got it back and its working…i also got a one month free xbox live to go with the year i paid for already never mind the 3 months i lost… anyway i have a three year waranty on it failing with the 3 red lights deal so that aint to bad….it could be worse i guess.

I knew there was no magical fix for the problem. One of the developers has already stated that the only remedy would be a complete redesign – possibly necessitating changing the shape of the casing. Must find that article and post it. In any case, it looks like MS have rushed out another shoddy piece of crap and once again people seem to be rushing to throw their money away on it. I love it when people post statements saying “I’ve got 100 xbox’s and none of them have ever failed.”

Just got my elite and love it, Had a few xbox 360s and yes Iv’e had afew problems but wouldn’t swap my elite for a ps3 even if you paid me. My wife works in retail and in their first week of ps3 release had over 300 returned with faults, Sony have had their day, they were good once, but they just can’t compete with xbox, even with their faults. Sorry guys but xbox is here to stay. Bioshock, wow, can’t wait for halo 3!

I think saying sony has had there day is silly….the company came into this game against two very powerful groups…sega and nintendo…and left them in the dust Sony also does more than just make a game console…All MS did was look at the specs on the PS2 and make a slightly better product. who can’t do that??…idiots then call THAT a victory…but time and again companies like Apple prove them wrong…MS is not a trend setter….Apple is…and Sony is as well, and it’s a cash rich company like MS…so…as soon as Sony catches up to a product that was realeased way too soon where in order to fix it right they may have to start from scratch(oh brother)..it’s xbox and MS that will reap the headaches….

Well, this is in response to all of the xbox haters out there. I had a Playstation and loved it. Then I bought a dreamcast (Whoops!) that was the next big thing. PS2 smashed it…and why? Better game selection, more money backing it, graphics were pretty similar, so that wasn’t a huge deal. A bud of mine bought the xbox about 4 months after it first released. Came with a package deal that included Halo. We were both like, “What the hell is Halo?” We thought with a name like “Halo” it sounded like some kids game. Man, were we wrong. I have beat that game more times than my mind can remember. What is the relevance of all this? One game is all it took. The xbox would never have been the “Xbox” without Halo. Still, PS2 held the market with tons more games with similar graphics as the xbox. What really set xbox apart from ps2 was xbox live. Sure, sony has free internet play, but you get what you pay for. $50 a year is a deal for xbox live. I have an xbox 360, and yes, it broke two weeks after I bought it. MS has great customer service and I had an overnight box at my door the next day and my xbox 360 back in my hands 5 days later. Lets not forget about the PSP and all the problems it had during its release. A bud of mine went through 4 of them in less than two weeks. Lucky he paid extra for Best buys exchange program. I didn’t know one person that had a PSP that didn’t have to at least return it once. “A slightly better product” than a PS2??? Why don’t you learn something about both systems hardware before you post comments on a forum. You want a non-biased view of both systems? Here are some links.

Overall, all new technology has its flaws. Microsoft is no different than anyone else. When the iPod first released it had battery problems. I mean how hard is it to perfect a battery in one of these gadgets. The iPhone with had its problems linking with the network. I still remember spending countless minutes blowing into NES game cartridges, and trying to perfectly seat them into the game console just to get the game to start. We sacrifice a lot of time and money into our “cutting edge” electronics. Microsoft should have had the xbox 360 bugs worked out by now. Again, in their defense, not many places would take a $1 Billion dollar loss to extend a year warranty to three years to fix all the flaws in our consoles. And finally; blue ray is not a reason to get a PS3. That is just Sony’s way of trying to corner a part of the market just like MS did with windows. Buy our PS3 with BlueRay built in, and buy our $30 blueray dvds. Go to Target, Wal-Mart, BestBuy, or some other place to buy DVDs. Look at the HD DVD selection against the BlueRay selection. There are about 3 HD DVDs to every 1 Blueray DVD. It would really suck for a PS3 owner to see that Sony is losing too much $ on Blueray dvds, so they stop making them. There is still an HD war being fought for the ownership of the movie market. Someone has to lose, and from what I have seen, sony has a long way to go. Peace, Love, and Game on!!! Well finally a well thought out argument…pike… you make some good points..but at the end of the day MS has a strong history of turrning out bad product sony does not. Here is some proof. I have just bought a Elite (in the uk). when i first turned it on, the power on light in the middle of the ring came on but no output to TV or connection to the controller. i turned it off and then on again, and it worked. i kept experiencing this problem after switching on after it has auto switched off after finishing background downloads. i have only had it a week and today when i switched it on i got the one red light and a message to call ms support. after switching off and then on again it works, just like before. i’ve been testing it all day and it seems to now not be playing up at all! what is going on?!
WELL I JUST PURCHASED A 360 APROX 3 1/2 HOURS AGO FROM FUTURESHOP. AND I GOT A RED RING. PLAYED BIO-SHOCK FOR ABOUT 1 1/3 THEN TURNED IT OFF ABOUT 30 MIN AFTER TURNED IT BACK ON RED RING…. THIS PROBLEM REALLY NEEDS TO GET FIXED.

people come on, there is a risk associated with everything you buy, i had two previous premiums which both got the ring of death but they were both also refurbished systems, i got my refund and got an elite with it and let me tell you, it runs so much quieter than the others and it doesnt get hot even after four hours of continuous play, i def think they resovled this issue, i see the videos of a elite getting the ring of death but if you look closer you’ll see its a modified premium with black casing not an elite, i have played my new elite on five different brand new games that have come out,, medal of honor airborne,,stranglehold, and battlefield 2 many many hours not one screen freeze and not one disk scratched, most of you people scratch your disks because you move you xbox from sitting vertical to horizontal with a disk running in it, so dont say they just ,magically scratch your disks,,stop fucking with it when its running and you shouldnt have to worry,,also keep an extra fan on it to keep it cool it does affect it alot—-ghostly me

hahah well ive been playing halo 3 constantly all week and still no problems with the box,,elite is def a must have,, quiet, doesnt get hot,hdmi makes a big difference on hd televisions,,man i lvoe it,, wish the whole monthly subscription thing was a little better, turns out once you put a credit card on file to purchase online subscriptions to live you cant take it back off, there is no feature to allow you to do that, you have to call xbox live and wait thirty mintues to talk to someone about getting it off, and heaven forbid it belongs to someone else cause then you cant do shit without having them on the phone even if everything but that is in your name. ahhhhhhhhh f-ing headaches

if you want a 360 that is more than likely not going to break on you then spend the extra money and get the elite,, its very quiet mine never gets hot even after continous hours of playing it, its def worth the money, but if you can wait another couple of months a new 360 elite called the elite falcon is gonna have the new 65nm chips in it which pretty much solves the whole ring of death problems surfacing in many 360’s now,,its gonna be as much as a nice laptop but def worth it

I had my elite now after my ‘white’ starting ‘unreading’ discs and after 2 weeks had a scare last night. The elite ignored discs and didnt seem to be even spinning them i air cleaned it and seems to be fine now but 2 weeks is a bit of a worry…….
Anyone who says MS is a money hungry corp just based on anything xbox is an IDIOT!!! doesnt anyone realize that both the Xbox and the XBOX 360 is costing MS more than they are actually making off of the systems. the First xbox campaign alone cost MS a few Billion dollars, with no where near that number in prophit. MS is doing us a favor by making great machines. They might have technical problems, but in the end I’d much rather be an xbox owner than a PS owner. My playstation 1 worshiping days are ancient history. Besides, If i wanted anything like the PS3, I would just build my own gaming PC.

FYI, I just left the Best Buy in Mira Mesa (San Diego) CA, and the techs in there say they are having two or three 360s (white boxes) a day returned for heat problems, and that there is a Microsoft recall going on. Don’t know much abt scratched disks yet but will continue to check with local electronics and game stores. BTW, I do not own either an Xbox 360 or PS3 as still trying to decide which way to go.

The Xbox 360 , is a piss poor system. and i hate having to wait 3 weeks for getting my damn system repaired .
i just did the rainbow six vegas update, and it screwed up my xbox, and harddrive. it erased my profile, and ALL of my game saves.
And my xbox 360 takes twice as long to start-up, and it was “repaired” a few months ago.
I even keep my xbox360 attached to a usb grill fan, and its sitting on a wire grate, to allow maximum airflow underneath.

I’m thinking of buying a 360 but i hear all of this bad mouth towards it “red lights of death” and “Eating your discs” i know 2 friends who have a 360, one of them has had to replace their 360 due to over heating and the other friend has had his gears of war scratched up. Is the Elite any better than the original 360? or should i just buy a ps3 as i have only heard of one minor fault with it.

Got my 360 Elite at launch on 29 Apr. It died on me 15 Oct. It was just as loud and just as hot as my friend’s Premium. It started with video glitches and red vertical bands then completely died. Mine had a nasty “SNAP” sound as it heated up. Probably the board expanding and stressing solder points. Coincidentally, my friends Premium died two days later.
I would advise purchasing a product replacement plan from wherever you buy the 360 from. If it dies, you take it back to the store and leave with a new one. Much better than waiting weeks for Microsoft to “fix” it. I will know better next time.
I bought a 360 elite today 11-19-07, and it doesn’t work. I notice the power bar light was orange, and the booklet mentions it has to be green. Now I have to return it.
my first 360 got the unplayable disk error.. i called micro and gave em my serial number than they said my name wasnt the right person who owned the console…i said wtf its sitting here infront of me..then they asked me where i bought it and i said walmart, then they wanted me to call wal mart but walmart didnt know, so they fucked me over..i bought a new console modded and had it for awhile now no problems….yet..by the way i dont no if its true but i called micro and i said why do you have a 33% fail rate and they said its not true they have a 14% fail rate which i find stil high…
wassup… my wife just got me a 360 elite brand spankin new.. i plugged everything in CAREFULLY!!! n turned on da system n the red ring came on.. i den turned it off and unplegged everything n plugged back in again, then it work. i played for 10 mins.. turned off, then later on i decided i wanted to play it again, n when i turned on again dat freakin red ring came on AGAIN!!!! so now imma just have my wife return it.. im very dissapointed in Microsoft..
the main reason the 360, get the
RROD (red,ring,of,death), is because the system wasn’t suppose to be played more then a certain time. (example48HRS. straight), it over heats. Causing it to get the RROD, with this then return it it to M$, for repair. I’ve got links to this but for legal reason i’ll just google it, or check youtube for reasons, as I did.
I bought the XBOX 360 for my son who is a straight A student and I felt he deserved it. Lot more money than I wanted to spend but what the hec. Had it for around 8 months and OH NO, dreaded rings of death. Sent it in, listened to my son complain for about a month and finally got it back right at a month later-same unit serial # matched. Everything was going fine until…OH NO, dreaded rings of death again!!! Now to a 11 year old this is the end of the world, especially at Christmas when 90% of his Christmas list was XBOX games. Called up support and they are sending us a box AGAIN and this time I demanded to talk to someone so I could vent. Spoke to a Matt, id# 6708 who asked me a question right away…is your unit plugged into a surge protector? I immediatley said yes, because it is and he informed me that that is the problem. Well, needless to say I got a little upset because as usual, somebody is blaming someone else for their problem. I asked why hadn’t anyone told me this before and why isn’t that on any of the sites I have looked at for suggestions on what to do and he informed me that it is in the manual. I proceeded to tell him “you mean to tell me that all of these millions of blogs of people like me complaining about this piece of crap product have all caused it themselves by using a surge protector” and he said yes, that most of them probably were. Well, I owe it to the world to let them in on this secret- that it is your fault, you the consumer who spent your hard earned money, you who wasted hours talking to XBOX support and weren’t told this secret, you, you are the problem!!! When I get this next unit back I vow to not plug it into a surge protector, I vow to leave it in a well ventilated area and I vow to read the owners manual as I was so smartly reminded by the XBOX support man, Matt id# 6708. This isn’t XBOX’s fault, this isn’t an inferior product, this isn’t a huge waste of money since they don’t send you a new unit, they just “fix” the one you have…which by the way, breaks again 3 months later…This is my fault and I accept responsibility…now its your turn!
Its as simple as this, there are so many problems for so many people who own a 360. The reason why we still don’t hate microsoft and send them evil messages is because we love our 360s… we just wished they worked. I have a console that scratches disks and has been fixed by MS twice. But its just gone again. My call of duty disk is also ruined. Gears of war ruined. Assassins creed ruined. no i dont move the console while the cd is in the damn machine Bill. You just need to use those goofy glasses while your building the damn thing. I want an xbox, nothing else. But if i cant play an xbox for weeks at a time whilst its getting fixed, what am i gonna play with? My girlfriend? I don’t think so. I’d rather a red ring of death any day.
