Xbox 360 Elite Prone to Same Problems as Others

Xbox 360 Elite Contents Large ImageWe’ve had numerous reports coming in of users getting 3 red lights on their brand new Elite consoles this morning. While this is a daily occurrence with 360 Premium and Core systems, we thought Microsoft would have had a better handle on the situation with the Elite.

We’ve all seen the pictures of the motherboard changes. I assumed that these would protect the console better from heat and such to make sure less consoles would die. But alas, no. Microsoft has introduced another new product that is failing at a higher than normal rate.

To top it all off, the disc scratching issue is back. Seriously Microsoft, what the hell? Did you completely get rid of your QA department?

I don’t have an Elite yet, and don’t plan on it anytime soon. I don’t feel like spending that much on something I basically already have.

I’ve received numerous reports from users stating these problems.

@whatthe dude unless you have been under a rock you must have heard about all the problems with the existing MS hardware. If you have a system that has had no problems just count yourself as lucky. the loot ninja staff has already burned thru at least ten! Kinda sad the Elite does not address these old issues.

my 360 is similar, its an original 360, it red lights basically 2 a month at least and if you move it in just the slightest bit, it will EAT YOUR GAME.

bty, taht nose you heard isn’t typical 360 loading sound, at least mine dosen’t make that sound!, that sounds like the eiltes grounding up the game without making you move it, what you know, micro did improve it at somthing!

Damn, MS sucks. I remember when I got my original XBox (non 360) when it first came out. I had to send it back under warranty three times to fix a “dirty disc error”. The final machine I had was OK for a while but started to have the same problem on occasion so I got rid of it all together. Been wanting a 360 but after hearing all of these QA issues, I’m gonna wait until these problems are ironed out.

This site is so BS. I don’t believe this story because:

They say they’ve had numerous reports of red ringed Elites but offer no proof. They don’t even mention usernames.

The video shows nothing. They hint that the noise you hear is it scratching the disc but they never show it! Could be a scratched disc when they put it in.

This whole paragraph is not backed up with any proof or facts:

“We’ve all seen the pictures of the motherboard changes. I assumed that these would protect the console better from heat and such to make sure less consoles would die. But alas, no. Microsoft has introduced another new product that is failing at a higher than normal rate.” - what the??? Says who? You guys, with no proof of any red ringed consoles or scratched discs? lol!

well my 360 redeemed itself as it begged for mercy 2 day, it died this morning and as im rather unhappy i planned to smash it up and run it over in my car but i gave it 1 more chance and it worked first time.
But those of u who dont believe that the 360 does have problems should perhaps look around and learn from other peoples experiences as all you people are doing is belittleing peoples efforts to get these problems rectified,
a lot of people are spending a lot of money on trying to get a working console at the moment and thats there hard earned cash like ur mums and dads that bought u your consoles. p.s no point flaming this kids as i wont be on here again.

Sounds like another load of BS from Sony. They employ people in their marketing department to create anti-microsoft articles and rumors, while i’m not denying some 360’s have problems it’s no where as widespread as is made out. Sceptical? Well how many people do you actually know who own a 360 that has broken? I must know at least 30 people with 360’s and not one of which has ever had a problem with it. Microsoft themselves had publicly stated that the number of returns they have had is a tiny proportion of the total 360’s out there and they can’t understand where people are getting this information from. Add that to the fact that this whole rumour was first started by Fox News on the 360’s release day. They ran the story “XBOX 360 is Broken!” before they had any way of finding out how many were in fact faulty and guess what, the same group that owns Fox happens to own Sony.

C’mon guys. You can’t pretend that all the X360 problems are made up. They’re reported from SO MANY different sources, you have to accept that this is just a fault the systems have. It’s not saying the X360 is any less awesome… they just are a bit fragile.

(hell even weapons of mass destruction were more debatable!)

    @Loadsa,

yeah microsoft never do anything like that *cough* actors employed at press launch of X360 at E3 2005 to cheer and clap every time anything positive was said, as reported by the july 2005 issue of EDGE magazine here in the uk *cough*. I myself know 5 people that have 360s and 4 of of them have failed at some point or another, in some cases two. So yeah maybe not as huge a problem as some websites make it out to be, but you have to accept there is a problem with the X360s thermal management, how ever its FAR too early to make comments about the state of the Elites, give them a chance they are 1 day old!

I was thinking about the elite instead but I think its time to tell microsoft to go screw themselfs. they dont seem to give a crap about us consumers. If they dont step up, the game makers are going to start jumping ship soon.

Using a flawed $4 BK xbox game to show that your system is messed up is not exactly credible. Along with only showing approved comments? Can anyone say fake? I can’t believe people actually fell for this. And where are the sources for “higher than normal rate?!?”

I love the 360 but I cant aford to pay $139 every year. I know 4 people who bought at launch. 3 have died once, and one is still working fine. Gonna get one, I’ve held out for so long and there are finally a couple games I’m really looking forward to playing… Mass Effect! I keep telling everyone, the only reason I bought an XBox was for Knights of the Old Republic, and it looks like Bioware is gonna do it for me again. (Curse you! KHAN!)

At any rate, problems aside, I still want one, and the advantage of working at a retail outlet is I can take my “small” employee discount and roll it into a 2 year replacement plan. It’s a shame really, between Xb360 and PS3 I know which system I want sitting next to my Wii, even with the problems I keep hearing about, would I own the system already if I thought it was more reliable, probably not. I think all consumer electronics now a days have a certain percentage of failure rates, seems a little high though, but having tested on the 360 hardware for several months, I think it worth the risk. it’s a good system.

@ Richard…. why do you suck at life? No seriously why? If you think that there are no problems with the 360’s then you are just hiding your head in the sand and I can only hope your system burns out soon so you can eat a big helpiung of humble pie… if you dont believe us or the many other sites reporting on the system issues just look at the fact that MS extended their warranty on the product. They didnt do this to be nice guys they did it because they had to, in order to keep market share and not lose customers. Games are a business folks and extending warranties costs money, a company will not do it unless they have to, plus a recall would destroy their user base.

Also it was stated that the elite did not fix the eating of the disks on ign and game informer BEFORE THE ELITE CAME OUT, if you dont beleive me on the sound, take your 360, your original one (or elite if your a complete micro moron) and bump it allitle while playing! This is a similar sound that my 360 made, though not this loud, when my 360 decided to eat my condemned when all i did was bump the entertainmetn center with my butt, i dont even have a butt!

Oh, how the tides have turned. People just like to bash on the PS3, claming that it’s doing trash, etc.. Granted, it’s not doing great, it’ll get up there. However, when ever Microsoft fucks up, no one really cares, thinking it’s minor. Lo and behold, their new system fucks up, but it’s okay right? A few scratches and a few red lights okay right? 360’s a great system as it is, there’s no need for an “elite”

Not that this comment will put this issue to rest but I have had a 360 since it came out literally at midnight luanch. It is not loud, no problems have been seen or noticed and I really enjoy the imporved backward compatability with the original xbox games, what this sounds like is some ps3 fanboys trying to get more ppl to buy some over priced gameing systems because they have no body to play with online lol. Honestly though everyone I know owns a 360 and we have not had any problems although I do know a couple of ppl who have had problems with the ps3 as in bloody melting the disc not scraching it (remeber the house that PS3 burnt down?). The Elite is just the same system with more memory but since the memory that comes with the 360 (white version) is more then enough for the typical gamer anyways its just a money grab I will agree with that.

for the truly paranoid, u can buy one for the back and one for the base. cooling issues no longer a problem, and the fans r usually around twenty bucks. u can’t expect me to believe that u would be willing to spend three to four hundred dollars on a console and not twenty bucks for a fan. of course micro isn’t gonna give it to u, that’s what they do. use ur brain and go fix the problem urself. i know, i know, u shouldn’t have to, but it’s a lot better than the alternative cost. had one since christmas of ‘06, and still no problems (knock on wood). laters

My Xbox 360 failed after about 12 months. I got in contact with the xbox 360 support people, they had a courier come pick up my xbox 360, a week later a new 360 was returned to me with no problems. 8 months into my new console and I’ve had no problems at all. In my experience the customer support team were good and quite efficient. I don’t even think my 360 was under warranty but they replaced it regardless!

Over 5.4 million xbox 360’s have been sold in the US alone!

    How many have failed?

There are only around 2000 posts on the ‘three red lights’ forum on the Offical xbox website and that seems to be the most troublesome problem.

I’ll do the maths…(or math if you are american!)…

Thats 0.04% of posts per xbox 360 sale!

    Such a small percentage eh?

facts the fact is ive had 4 consoles since launch. FG well i think its clear theres a problem 4 of my friends have had the same problems and are on there 2nd and 3rd console.
THERE IS A FLAW THAT NEEDS SORTING…

MONEY MONEY MONEY MICROSOFT YOU HAVE MADE ENOUGH OUT OF US ON XBOX360 NOW I WOULD LIKE A PRODUCT THAT WILL LAST YEARS.
THE 360 HAS A LIFE SPAN OF AVERAGE 6 TO 12 MONTHS THEN YA PAY.
I LOVE MA 360 I THINK IT IS AWSOME BUT IM AFFRIAD WHERE BEING RIPPED OFF.
IF THEY WANNA WIN THE CONSOLE WAR THEY NEED TO STEP IT UP AND GIVE US UNHAPPY PEOPLE WHICH IS NOT I REPEAT WHICH IS NOT A SMALL AMOUNT A GOOD LASTING CONSOLE.
I KNOW THAT NEARLY 98% OF 360 CONSOLES WILL BREAKDOWN IN LESS THAN 14MONTHS AND THATS FACT.

I’m not sure that you know for a fact that 98% of consoles break down in less than 14months. How could you possibly know that? However I’m sure it is a high percentage.

The console failing is only an issue if it’s out of warrenty. My advice to anyone who has a out of warrenty failed console (that has been looked after properly) is this…kick up like stink and demand a replacement console! It worked for me. Good luck. Give them hell!

Ive had two Xbox 360’s since the release date and i can confirm that the first one i bought broke after about 4 months without any warnings at all. The funny thing about this story is the error message read that i needed an Xbox 360 to play the game i inserted (ironic ah?). Im on my second console and to be honest ive had no problem at all and this ones about 1 1/2 years old so not sure what other problems that are being told of but i have to agree with most people that this is mis information in order to help the PS3 sales which are crap. I can go to any Computer shop in England and buy a PS3 and how long has it been out?? I couldnt buy an Xbox 360 for months after the release. Stick that in ya pipe Sony and tug hard…………………………………

    This website is interesting:

    http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/710/710364p1.html

It has info on a poll that was held regarding xbox 360 failure rate.

This happened to me 2 weeks after I got my elite. I returned it for a pro now I’m having more issues but not the grinding sound like w/ the elite. It’s locking in game then not reading disc’s, any, after I reboot.

Most of you guys just don’t understand the point of the Elite. Yes, at first glance, it seems very pointless to come out with a new version so early….and it is! But, I have seen it quoted many times by Elite designers themselves, that, “The Xbox 360 Elite was purely designed for those who have not already purchased an Xbox 360 (core system OR premium)”. It was NOT, however, designed to compete with the PS3 in Hard Drive Gigs…That just wasn’t the point…but, I’m sure if Microsoft wanted to, they could obliterate Sony…True, Sony did very well in the 80’s/90’s…but, now Sony’s just thriving to compete with the next generation systems. And as for the Red Rings…You’re not lucky if you DON’T get them…you’re just UNLUCKY if you do! My theory is, “If you can’t risk the cash, then don’t buy the trash.” If you guys are so freakin scared that you’re gonna buy a 360 that’s gonna wig out….then, don’t buy it. Either you guys need to wait until ALL of the bugs are worked out and Microsoft will cover you 100%, no matter what happens…OR, you need to live life to the fullest and go ahead and purchase your Xbox, and try to get some fun out of it…And that’s the truth.

I just bought an Elite new today, brought it home the whole thing is messed up. the system doesnt recognize the harddrive. I could not transfer any data from my premium. When I when to jump online it said the hard drive was not connected. I was on the phone with the Xbox Live help and after 2 hours they said it was the hardware and that Microsoft would have to contact me directly in 3-5 days to see about a solution to the problem. Crappy considering I had to drive 86 mi to get one.

News corp. does not own sony! The Xbox 360 does have issues! both systems cost the samw when you add on the hd dvd, and wifi…Sony system not know for just plain over heating, and the power core is in the console not a seprate brick. Sony makes a better product. Simple.

These people claiming that the 360 is flawless are either hopeless fanbois, or extremely extremely lucky. No shit that with the amount of 360s sold, there might be some that actually came out well crafted but the majority of them suck.

Mine crapped out on me, and it has for countless others. I’ve kept mine in an air conditioned room, away from all other electronic devises, cleaned almost every day, and it still died. I don’t want to hear that crap that about Criss Angel levitating your 360, but you shouldn’t have to treat a new gen console like a baby.

By the way mike 5,000000 divided by 50= 100000 per state worth of xboxes, if even 0.1 percent of that failed that would be 1000…so saying only 0.04 percent of them are bad while using a number so large as 5,000000 don’t mean jack. potentially 1000 or so people in any given state could be affected by bad xboxes if this is the case…i dont know how the numbers break down per state for sure but id say that the east coast west coast and parts of the south got bigger shipments than say nebraska….point im making is that….if the numbers were between 600-1100 that is unaceptable, thats why MS now has an extended waranty, and in some cases a dont ask policy…but…. i could be wrong on the math…he he he..see if it checks out

Why is it “rubbish”….i was only stating the stats as they are as well…using YOUR figures…..all im saying is that even though you dont hear about working xboxes as much as you do ones that dont..it still means MS has some issues to work out with its product at the end of the day all we want to do is play games and when you have purchased xbox live for a year, the head set numerous point cards bought at least 12 games….and the upgrades to oblivion that pc people can get for free and then some……yes….people tend to get a bit angry that the main part of the purchase the damn box itself wont work right…that is the true meaning of RUBBISH!

Well trash-rubbish-shit…..whatever….makes no difference to me….point is i dont like having to deal with a product that has as many problems as this product seems to have…. because of what i have invested i have to deal with MS for now…..but if i would have waited for PS3 i might not have as many games to play but they would be getting played instead of people telling me about how much fun they are having on Oblivion i might have spent 600, but that would have been the end of it…most have had to pay to get repairs, so the cost becomes a washout issue…finally im not trying to come down on you because you like xbox…. maybe yours works fine…i only used what u said because thats how bad it COULD be….im also talking to the people who have the same issues i do with a company product that has a high fail rate…if the problem is found in any xbox it should get fixed for free no-matter the generation because its the SAME PROBLEM wheather it was bought today or in 05.

if im wrong then tell me what im wrong about dont just say im talking trash, that aint a strong aurgument

Okay folks, here’s my story: I decided the other day to go out and buy a refurb 360. At the timeI was at my parets for the long weekend out in the country. So I drive all the way to the nearest EB-Games and pick one up. About an hour drive in a gas gussling peice of shit truck. I get the 360 play it for a bit (GRAW 2) and it starts to freeze up every ten minutes or so. Then I get the 3 lights of death. So I take the goddamn thing back ( another long drive, and a raping of my wallet on gas) and get another one. Thi time they promised me it would work. Hell it even said on the box 100% garanteed. So what the hell I thought. What are the odds that 2 could me screwed up. Well well well…. I get the thing home and ……. 3lights of death. So as you can assume I’m mighty pissed. Now I’m heading back down to take it back and buy an elite. So I hope for god sake it works.

    LOADSA,

You’re an idiot. I’ve had 2 xbox’s break. I know a bunch of people with the same problem. Yeah, I’m sure Sony has an entire department devoted to writing bogus stories about the 360 breaking. That’s exactly how a multi-billion dollar business operates. I’m sure they don’t have anything better to do.

It’s a flawed product. You’re xbox will break. Just wait dude.

Okay well I got the elite yesterday , and so far no problems. When I was at EB Games though they told me EB had a conference and voted not sell any refurbs anymore. Apparently the store calculated that they have a 92% defficiency rate. Microsoft must have a team of monkeys from Cambodia fixing them and sending them out to be sold again.

IGN published an article yesterday explaining that 0 of xbox 360’s are rumored to be defective. I just got off the phone with MS, and though the operator didn’t have to reveal that info, she totally confirmed that more than 0 of xbox 360’s experience hardware failure!

Do the math. About 10 million units have been sold to date. So roughly, 3 million of those 10 million units break!

So for all of you lucky little bitches that are like (insert high pitched girl voice here)…

“I’ve had my xbox since it launched and haven’t had any problems”

You’re not nearly as safe as you think you are. In fact, you’re narrowly dogding the bullet. Furthermore, we know that a 1/3 of all xbox 360’s break within the first 2 years (sometimes it’s within the first 2 months). There’s still tomorrow, next month, next year, and the year after that. Are you really that confident, in light of the numbers, that you’re xbox will survive?

Have you even considered the possibility that there is an irreversible design flaw that has gone unaddressed in every xbox 360 ever sold? Have you considered that that design flaw always produces the same result? That result being the 3 red lights of death? Have you considered that?

Well, there are few nerdy, really nerdy people out there that have cracked open the 360 and have discovered that there is in fact a fatal flaw. I don’t know the details because i’m not an engineer but i was able to understand that the xbox produces a lot of heat and that heat causes certain parts to become less solid and in that process certain parts press against a hugely important component resulting in it breaking that super important component. Hence the hardware failure and the 3 red lights.

So, if you play a lot your xbox will get hot and it will eventually break. It sucks. It just really, really sucks.
