Sony quietly updated the PS3 firmware today to version 1.54. It’s a very very minor update. Here’s the only changes, from the official changelog:

• New for 1.54: [Screen Mode] has been added as an option in the options menu for video chat. The image of the person you are chatting with during video chat can now be changed to match the screen size.

• New for 1.54: You can now use a compatible USB camera compliant with USB video class (UVC) for video chat.

Yay for camera support. I don’t really care about video chatting, and most people I know don’t either. Can’t wait for the big update in March.

Supposedly, people are having some hard drive issues after installing this update. Some users on the official PS3 forums are reporting hard drive corruption errors with upgraded (and a few stock) hard drives. I haven’t updated my PS3 yet. I think I’m going to wait just in case there are problems with the update. Not like I use my PS3 online anyway, since there’s nothing to use it online for…
