PS3 Firmware Update v1.30… Ummmmm [Update]

Sony today updated the PS3 firmware to v1.30. It’s know that this “fixes” the problem with 1080i resolution on older HDTVs. Nothing else is known, since they haven’t put up a changelog yet on the website. After updates, I discovered that their “fix” is absolutely fucking retarded. Here’s what they did…

Before the update, the hierarchy of resolutions looked like this: 1080p > 720p > 1080i > 480p > 480i.

After the update, this is all they did: 1080p > 1080i > 720p > 480p > 480i.

So let’s recap. Change hierarchy, solve all the problems, right? Fucking wrong. Now my 720p HDTV will NOT display in 720p unless I disable 1080i. All good and well, let’s try that. Hmmm, BluRay movies don’t play in 720p, and I just disabled any other resolution they may work in. Well fuck me in the goat ass, my BluRay movies go to 480p once you disable 1080i.

Sony needs to get their shit together, because seriously, this is getting out of control. They “fix” something by breaking other stuff. I know, people will comment saying there’s no big difference between 1080i and 720p. Well, with gaming, there is. That refresh rate makes a big difference.

Please Sony. Please. Get your heads out of your asses and make the PS3 right. You’re digging your own grave.

[Update] So I think I’ve done it. I’ve figured out Sony’s strategy with the PS3:

Step 1: Fuck over 1080i HDTV owners
Step 2: Fuck over 720p HDTV owners
Step 3: Require everyone to buy a 1080p HDTV to play the PS3

    I’m a little confused by one aspect here. We already know the PS3 won’t up-convert 720p games to 1080i, instead dropping them to 480p. So, when you say “Now my 720p HDTV will NOT display in 720p unless I disable 1080i.” what exactly won’t display? HDD-based videos and pictures and such?

    Wow. I had it all set up with my LCD HDTV and 720p, and now my Blu-Ray movies are scaling down to 480p. What’s the freaking point of spending more money to own Blu-Ray and this $2000 40″ LCD HDTV if my Blu-Rays are scaling down to DVD quality. Sony must be a bunch of idiots!
