So this Christmas is no different from any other in terms of hot “new” toys. In past years it has been the tickle me Elmo and the XBOX 360; with the launch of the PS3 and the Wii this is no different. People camped out in order to get their hands on a system and fed the flames of anticipation along with the media. System manufacturers are geniuses, they make a limited supply and then over hype the systems to build up buzz and curiosity. This is actually a pain because you get people that aren’t even gamers buying these things up just for resale purposes or because they were caught up in the hype. Systems are actually already on eBay for thousands of dollars, it boils down to an over hyped demand with a limited supply inflating the resale prices of these systems.
I actually got up on Sunday and went over to Toys R Us to try and get a Wii for someone and came pretty close. The people two spots ahead of me got the last ticket! I have to say that even though it wasn’t for me the sheer hunt made me go to 3 other places, you get caught up in the thrill of the hunt and end up chasing things you didn’t even want, kudos to the marketing people at Sony and Nintendo. Way to screw with the consumers mind and creating fake demand!
