PS3 HD Scaling Issues, Other Annoyances

So I’ve found pretty quickly that the PS3 has some MAJOR High Definition scaling issues. It’s affecting almost everyone in both games and movies. Many games made for 1080p won’t scale properly to 1080i, and sometimes 720p. I’m having a huge issue with Blu-Ray movies. It shows as 1080i (even though I have my HDTV setup as 720p in the Media Bar), but it’s very grainy and looks like standard DVD. I spent 2 hours on the phone tonight with Sony Customer Support trying to troubleshoot the issue. The first guy I spoke with for 45 minutes, and he was about as smart as a retarded monkey. He was basically telling me that my HDTV was broken because it can’t display 720p, even though I told him some games and all downloaded content displays fine at 720p. He wanted me to try a few things and call back. So 20 minutes later, I called back and spoke to a fairly helpful woman. After reading what happened in the last phone conversation, she put me on hold for 2 minutes, and came back and said it’s a known issue that is being looked into. I told her how angry I was about spending a shitload of money on a PS3 and Blu-Ray movies for it all not to work as it should (and highly advertised by Sony). She said a firmware update should be available “in the next couple days” and that their team is “aware it’s a major issue and will be fixing it quickly.” Yeah, I’m sure that means 2 months before we see anything.

It’s pretty sad how broken the PS3 is. There’s tons of issues people are coming up. You’d think they’d do some better QA. I also found that it will completely freeze up if you try to reply to any messages you have on the system. Aside from that, there’s a ton of annoyances that could be fixed fairly easily. For instance, getting notifications of messages and when friends come online, like on 360, background downloading and queuing of downloads in the PlayStation Store, like on 360, a more unified online presence (same friends list in the XMB and across all games), like on 360. Sony has seen Microsoft make all these huge advances that people have come to expect and love, and haven’t done a thing to incorporate any of it into their system. Hopefully we’ll see it soon.

  1. [...] One of the major selling points for the new PS3 is / was it’s Blu-ray capability, but ever since it was released this weekend reports have been coming in of users suffering from flaky firmware.  Now we here that it is also not as good with high definition video as previously thought with one user (Lost Ninja) reporting on the issue. $ony, you suck.

And I laugh at all the people buying it, taking it home, and not quite working, like the story above.

next time don’t be an idiot consumer, idiot

  3. HAHA

That is what you get for buying a product as soon as it comes out. I don’t feel bad for you.

  4. Sony rushed this thing into production and it shows. Sony is having one hell of a bad year.

  5. Did you expect anything different? Sony has a long history, when it comes to their game systems, of telling consumers and third-party developers the they’ll get whatever Sony decides to give them at whatever price Sony decides to charge and like it. Did you expect the rushed delivery of an untested and overpriced console to be any different? Did you bother to read anything at all on the Web about the PS3 in the last 3 months or so? Next time maybe you’ll pay better attention to a company’s history and the warning signs in their botched launch.

You get what you pay for, and in this case you paid an awful lot for an awful system.

  6. lol owned

    LOL owned. Poor Sony!

  7. D.Vader

Dood the system just came out. Firmware updates will solve many of these problems. 360 had issues when it was released too.

  8. Truth

I’m sorry, but it’s hard to take your article seriously when you start complaining about bluray not looking good on a 720p tv. First of all it was never meant to be displayed on the half-hd tvs that are so common. Scaling for those tvs by the nature of the resolution will be tough to perfect and may not get much better then a 480p dvd. No Bluray 1080i? Give me a break how about me buying a 360 and getting the three red lights of death to wait three weeks!!!!!

  9. Zameus

I’m sorry to say, but consumers can only blame themselves. You bit on the advertisements, you bit on their marketing schemes, and you failed to neglect Sony’s past history, or another past history regarding new console releases. I’m sure Sony has a great product on hand, but until they FIX all their bugs I won’t be getting one until next year. It’s why the 360 and Wii will be the systems to buy this Christmas season. Now you have a $600+ system sitting there and not able to use it at it’s full potential. POWNED by $ony! Sorry. :(

  10. 360

    @Truth:

So what you’re saying is that the PS3 will, and should, look like crap on 99% of all hi-def displays out there? Native 1080p displays are relatively new. Hardly anybody has them. Most people who have a hi-def display have a 720p, like my 50″ Sony rear projection LCD. If the PS3 requires a 1080p display, that’s pretty retarded. I have my popcorn, and I’m ready to sit back and watch the PS3 go down in flames.

  11. ks

Weird, I have my PS3 set to 720p and BluRay looks great, and displays in that resolution. I haven’t bothered with 1080i since my set’s native res is 768.

Also, you do get pop up notification of friends coming online.

So that’s at least two things that don’t jibe. Did you install the system update when you first got online? Have you gotten online at all yet?

  12. WarriorSlayer

man, that’s what u get buying the console in the first day, even the firsts x360 consoles was having some problems, i think u guys should stay calm and wait for a fix, every console comes with some problems in the start.

  13. It does not surprise me to hear of any of these issues. It does make me wonder what the QA process on these things are? Dont they have departments at Sony dedicated to Beta testing these things? Shouldnt majority of these things be caught prior to release? For the price gamers are paying now I want a system ready to rock out of the box, not after a firmware update. When you buy a car you dont wait for an update to make left hand turns, why are game products any different?

  14. Marthinus

    @360

You will wait for a long while, if you were retarded enough to buy a substandard HDTV then that is your problem. The smart people held off with their HDTV purchases to get True HDTV, not some half HDTV like poor old you. My PS3 with my brand new 1080p HDTV will rock thank you very much. Maybe 5 years from now you will join the true HDTV era with a real 3rd Generation console, not some lame underpowered piece of hardware,

  15. cobnat

drunk pandas and 360 – duh!
The whole point of the PS3 is 1080p resolution. Half the cost of the console is due to the fact that it is also a Blu-Ray DVD player. You people are looney if you think that it’s worth it to buy a full HD (1920×1080p) gaming console and DVD player for $600 (if not more) and use it on your low res TV. Just get a Wii. the games are better and there won’t be resolution issues. Or spend the extra $800 for new TV. Sony should have required proof from the first purchasers of the device that they would be able to use it to it’s full functionality, helloooo, they didn’t make this device for you – they made it for those who have the proper equipment to use it. The high price was supposed to weed out the low end gamers – i mean really, why did you buy it?

  16. Steve

Hope the firmware doesn’t have a rootkit!

  17. lululala

i feel sorry for sony that people who have issues like this are able to comment. i can only hope that people recognize that there is no reason to blame sony or feel sorry for someone who says “games made for 1080p won’t scale properly to 1080i, and sometimes 720p”

  18. Ukatoton

In response to Marthinus, may I ask what would be the point in getting a HDTV to play on a NES/Master System/Atari 7800/C64/GX4000?

And why would you have to wait 5 years?

Seems like an awful waste of money to me.

  19. Lon

The funny thing is that everyone seems to except the fact that console releases are going to suck. If you all would not stand in line for a week, not buy everything that has a ps3, or x360, or wii logo on it the second it releases, then the companies would be forced to make a better product. From a business stand point, they can release shit, at what ever price they want, because idiots stand in line for a week to buy it. If I was sony, I would have done the same thing. In the end, you bought it. They got your 600. Why should they change, consumers need to make them change. That wont happen though, because when they release PS4. Which will suck by nature, and not work at first. There will be lines around the block again.

You get what you deserve when you encourage sony and other companies to act this way. Ill wait till next year, or christmas and buy a x360. The price is going to drop after black friday and the bugs are worked out.

Have fun with your 600 dollar brick. I hear you can hook it up to your sisters 13 inch TV with the RF converter and it should work ok though.

I personally find the ps3 launch to be more embarassing to watch than the original xbox launch which Micro$oft had been critized so much for at the time. I *wanted* an xbox when it came out (wouldn’t spend the loot) and when I played one the first time I was impressed not saying “wtf this shit is all busted” like SO many people say about ps3 now…..

and no I’m not a fanboy I am a gamer and I mostly use my pc but I’ve owned ps1,ps2,xbox,n64,nes,snes,sms,psp,gb,gba,gbc,ds,gg….so I don’t care who made it or what it cost because I buy them 2 years after they come out when the price is cut in half and the amazing next gen GAMES are out..

  25. Hayes

It amazes me how Sony has brain washed all you people with this “true” HD crap. 720p is every bit HD has 1080p and 1080i. The difference between all of them is minimal when comparing them all to SDTV. As already stated, 1080p is new, just like bluray, and to make a system that does not scale to a 90%+ population of HDTVs is utterly stupid and asking for trouble. If 90%+ of the population is retards for buying a HDTV that is only “half” HD and not “True” HD then sony is going to be biting the dust at the hand of a bunch of retards.

  32. C’mon. You guys with your “half of HD” statements make me laugh. How fking retarded are you? “True HD”??? LMAO!!! The only things capable of 1080p signals at this time are Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, and PS3 games. TV broadcasting companies are adopting 720p/1080i as broadcast standards. NOT 1080p and not anytime in the future (at least 10 years).

720p and 1080i are the unofficial HD standards right now, NOT 1080p. So for SONY to make a product that is not compatible with 90% of the HDTV’s in the homes of HDTV owners is FKING STUPID AND BAD BUSINESS.

They BETTER fix it with a firmware update. Its not worth spending over $2,000 just to move up from 720p/1080i to 1080p.

I would like to address the online stuff you complain about. First off your friends do pop up when they sign on, do you have any friends? Secondly about the downloads, if you had 360 when it first came out it was the same exact thing. When you were downloading something off xbl you could do anything else. So Sony will do the same thing and do it with a firmware update. Yeah i don’t like how my blu-rays go to 1080i when i have ti setup to 720p but they still look ten times better the standard dvd. But watching the trailers in 720p look a lot better than the 1080i. But i watched superman returns, talladega nights, Monster house, Ice age and fantastic four. the only one that look grainy was monster house but it still looked great. Ice Age looks amazing and Superman. so I dunno how 1080i makes them look like standard dvd.

  36. wanice

its funny how nintendo never has any of these release problems that the box and station seem to have.

I just got a ps3 from gamestop the other day to 0ff on eGay but i decided to open it up and play with it and on my 32″ Olevia 720P/1080i LCD monitor it wont display BR-disc of Talledega nights at 720p it displays at 1080i an looks like poop. It does however play resistance fall of man at 720p and ridge racer 7 at 720p I have it side by side w/my x360. For dvd the 360 is awesome because of the scaler and anti-aliasing. My roommates want to play the 360 cuz there are no games for ps3 that are worth playing right now. Resistance is in no way as good as gears of war. just my .02 :D

  38. everyone one here ma hankshi karin. PS3 rocks. xbox360 sucks. PC is the best. anyways sony will fix their problems cause they know that many people have 1080i, which really u idiots don’t know is not a bit different from 1080p. therefore they are goin to address the problem and hopefully as well with the controller issues. Xbox had problems too so Stfu have a nice day! and thank you

  39. kjstone05

I have had ps3 sence nov17th , it plays great on my 52 tv. I am not having any issiues with the 720,1080i, my tv does not have 1080p, and it looks awsome. I can only imagin 1080p! but you can tell the difference 10 fold. and when i first went online with this game i downloaded the patch. remember that patches will fix most problems. did i mention i have not touched my 360 sence opening my ps3 box , it outplays .looks better , faster, smarter. may take a few months to get the bugs out , but if your waiting to but this your waiting to long for a machine that is patch friendly.

You know…it REALLY kills me how people are siding with the company on this. How can you sit there and blame all of these people who set a goal and saved for this system, and were LIED to by Sony?!? Some people actually had something to look forward to and were told nothing but good things and promised that they were getting the best of the best and what they ended up with was a system that didn’t live up to it’s reputation.

What’s even worse is…everyone accepted the release date being pushed back and all the delays and shadiness with what was going on with the release because they were believing in Sony, that this was all for the betterment of the system and that they weren’t going to release a product that wasn’t complete and would have issues…another LIE!!! I hope that people remember the way that this company is setting their standards and will be vocal about it, because only then will we see an effect from it. And as far as anyone who’s had to deal with their call center to fix anything…WOW…I’m sorry. We’ve dealt with it too and it’s no fun adventure.

So for all of you who accolmplished your goal of obtaining a PS3 on release i say kudos to you on achieving something that only a SMALL percentage of America was able to do. You’ve achieved something really good and it’s a shame that it was laced with lies from Sony. Don’t blame yourselves for buying the system too early or anything…it is Sony that will have the reprocutions for this and they’ll eventually fix all of the bugs!!

  41. Companies always lied, lied before, and will lie again.
Any consumer who think he is not lied to after seeing some commercials is… frankly put… just an idiot.

Until the stupid consumers will realize that if they do not buy crappy products they are no longer created.

  42. A-NONY-MOUS

Hmmm…why didn’t they include a remote? this thing is a toy…no hdmi cable, no component cable…we’re talking about $20 each! No IRE 0 setting for movies, 720P scaling is broken:

movies output on my 61″ sammy in 720P using HD-dvd are stunning, normal dvds upscaled on that same XA-1 HD-dvd player look way better than bluray 720P on the ps3. hope it’s fixed on an update.

if they worried as much as protecting the HDMI signal, this thing would have been perfect at launch.

  43. DogPhish2112

Just got mine last Thursday, I don’t know what you guys are saying, this system looks sick on my 1080i tv

  44. Kavik00

I’ve had my PS3 since about a week after launch. Not one complaint! Play 720 games, 1080 P games and blu-ray movies all the time. Never had an issue. Looks amazing on my 1080 P TV.

    Thanks Sony!

  45. xgadlp

Hey — just wanted to put in my 2 cents that I’m extremely happy with PS3’s performance. I have a 2-year-old Samsung 720p set, 61-inch. I have it connected to the PS3 through HDMI. The PS3 sets the TV’s resolution automatically between 480p (DVD) 720p (most games) and 1080i (for the interface and for blu-ray). Even though my set is 720p native, it accepts the 1080i signal and scales internally. And Blu-ray looks AMAZING. Way better than HBO-HD and Showtime-HD off of DirecTV. Watched Ice Age 2 on Blu-Ray last night, and while the movie was mediocre, the picture was beyond incredible. In addition, the 720p games I’ve tried look spectacular. I am a bit disappointed that multi-channel SACD playback necessitates a receiver with an HDMI 1.3 interface (which doesn’t even exist yet on the market) but that’s just another toy to buy later… Darin

  46. blake

Truth, no offense, but you’re a fucking IDIOT. If you think the PS3 should not look good on 720p native TV’s then you need to shut your damn mouth. You clearly know NOTHING about HDTVs. 720p is by FAR the most common HD resolution, and looks absolutely STUNNING on 360 games and HD-DVDs. So why should Blu-Ray be any different? It shouldn’t. It should look amazing in 720p, not fuzzy and unclear. So by your logic, the PS3 should only look good on super expensive 1080p TVs? Idiot, just leave.

  47. blake – yeah, someone woke up on the wrong side of the fucking bed. It’s been confirmed by basically every news outlet that the PS3 does NOT have an internal hardware scaler, meaning it can’t display BluRay movies at 720p. Do your homework before you come in here acting like you know a thing or two. No one ever said 720p sucks. Your post shows me you’ve never used a PS3 and are a complete Microsoft fanboy.

  48. The PS3 will be updated several times over the course of its manufacturing. There is already a new version manufactured for the Australia /Euro/UK markets. Then there will be the smaller HD version, possibly later this year.
